I worked at Grady Health System full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

It is a healthcare system with extreme challenges and there are a lot of learning opportunities for new to healthcare candidates.

    Cons

Grady has been pushing employee engagement and patient satisfaction for years. However, the corporate culture is very different in action. They misuse Just Culture and have very poor leadership especially in EMS. Don't bother working for Grady, other facilities can give employees equal if not better experience.

    Advice to Management

Take a hard look at the leadership structure and strategic plan in EMS, it's not working.

Excellent customer service. Highly educated professional staff who are devoted to continuing their education in providing research evidence based health care. All levels of staff work well together in meeting the goal of excellent services to their customers...

    Cons

The pay is not the best but this hospital is not a privately owned, nevertheless, the experience one gets from working with around the staff and type of services provided makes up for the pay Because once you have this hospital on your resume all doors are open for employment.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your staff, show respect and appreciation for service provided

I have been working at Grady Health System full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Benefits...401K, health/dental/vision not too expensive compared to other places.
    Pay
    Location
    Large Organization
    Looks good on resume

    Cons

Management...favoritism, micromanagement, If you're not in the 'circle of trust' your opinion doesn't matter. They dress working here up really nice, but it's just ok. After a while you see what really goes on. Lack of accountability. No point in bringing any concerns to anyone. Nothing gets done. Understaffed. Dealing with your own department or other departments is a pain more often than not. Little to no sense of respect. You get used to dealing with entitled and rude staff...nice and pleasant people stick out here! There are many, many people with stressful jobs though. And plenty more bringing their own baggage to work. Don't expect too many thank you's or have a nice days. I've never heard "Good Job" either, nor would I ever expect one from my supervisor.

After being here long enough, you adjust. It just is what it is here. Grady will NEVER become the organization it could be until leadership and staff are competent in what you would think would be basic principles of customer service, management, and patient care. There is a culture of mediocrity which often bleeds into day-to-day interaction. You realize people who truly care and want to make an impact are not in positions to do so, nor are most of them valued. Let's not get into the favoritism with promotions or the people who everyone knows need to retire or find another place to work.

I am resigned to staying until something better comes along here or somewhere else. I still recommended working here because of the benefits, location, and sustainability. It's not going anywhere and is at the very least a steady check. You could certainly find worse...finding something better hasn't been a walk in the park either.

    Advice to Management

Don't make your inability to manage a problem of the employees. No reason their own incompetence or inability to do what is needed should impact a staff member's workload and day to day. I don't believe the accepted culture of mediocrity will never change here. Prove me wrong.
