I worked at Grainger full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Support systems in place Compensation Profit Sharing

    Cons

Benefits are mediocre Good 'ol boys club present in promoting decisions Slow to change

    Advice to Management

You talk about the PIE method, Performance, Image, and Exposure the later being the most important in your hiring decisions, however this lends itself to hiring individuals who are better networked rather than the most qualified. I suggest a more egalitarian approach where the top candidate is given a chance rather than buddies or pals.

I worked at Grainger full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good leadership. Accountability and responsibility for the growth of your own accounts, bring value to clients and make decisions.

    Cons

Too much reliance on Salesforce. Company wields it as a Big Brother tracking/micromanaging tool.

I have been working at Grainger full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Great people, numerous development opportunities across the US and in other countries, and solid benefits (profit-sharing, stock options, health and well-being, charity match, vacation time).

    Cons

Shifting support staff out of the US, closing down locations, difficult pricing model, trust in sales force has diminished. Failing to focus on the core business while trying to expand into other online markets under different names and causing more confusion within The company and with customers.

    Advice to Management

Focus on fixing and supporting the core business!

    No opinion of CEO

I worked at Grainger full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Excellent PTO, profit sharing plan, health benefits, work/life balance

    Cons

Weak/unimpressive leadership within sales force, recent shift towards data and operations has compromised the morale of the sales force, limited opportunities for advancement within sales. It doesn't pay to stay at Grainger (if you are in sales) for more than a few years. There are better opportunities out there without having to look very hard.

    Advice to Management

Reward tenured, over performing sales reps. Grainger doesn't recognize talent like it should be and will lose talented sellers like myself and many others who are able to find better career opportunities elsewhere. Morale is lower now with the sales force than it has been in the 5 years I worked at Grainger. Realize that if you want to retain great sales people, then you need to compensate them accordingly. Grainger may pay well for the MRO industry, but there are other industries that will pay experienced reps much better.

I worked at Grainger full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Sales training is best in the business. Expectations are set and you get a year in each roll to really understand the territory and customers. Great PTO, Paid holidays, and work life balance. Teammates, managers, and upper-level management is great

    Cons

upper level management has lost sight of taking care of the employee with all the changes to the organization. Grainger has always been and will always be priced high and that needs to be changed to be more competitive to end users that don't have sales in front of them.

    Advice to Management

Take a look at what made Grainger a top 100 company to work for back in 2013. Bring those things back and incorporate them into the culture. Do not lose sight of what Made Grainger an amazing company to work for.

I have been working at Grainger

    Pros

Best product offer in industry. Only place to work amongst larger Mro players. Great supply chain but losing seasoned employees due to better pay

    Cons

Starting to micromanage through Salesforce which adds to already heavy workload. Mandate for this is coming down from top and this adds a lot of work that we don't have

I worked at Grainger full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Passionate people who are always looking to do the right thing by their employees and their customers. They invest in training and technology so that those of us in the field are never left wanting for something our competitors have.

    Cons

Long hours and goals that are set further and further away every year. The sales positions seemed to be designed to have about a 5-year shelf life.

    Advice to Management

Set more realistic goals for the sales team.
