    Pros

Good benefits, great staff to work with, and fun watching the organization grow and change with the community changing.

    Cons

I have been working at Grand Rapids Public Schools full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The kids are awesome. Truly. They are needy and misunderstood by the general public for the most part. They can drive you insane but they are the very best part of the job. The growth they make is awesome to watch. To see these kids persevere despite some of the obstacles in their home lives is nothing short of a miracle in many cases.

    Cons

Upper management is out of touch. Everything has to be approved by central office. Zero autonomy. A bunch of people who have never taught before are telling teachers how to do the jobs they are trained to do. Some people in central office don't even know anything about the schools they are supposed to be serving. Overpaid administration and teachers and support staff go years without even a cost of living increase. Some of the hardest working teachers I have ever met work in these schools with little respect given by the admin (and many parents sadly). These teachers all deserve so much more than they receive. The kids do too.

    Advice to Management

Get it together before you lose the amazing teachers who give their heart and soul to your district. We are what make you look good but we get none of the accolades.

I have been working at Grand Rapids Public Schools full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I ADORED the kids and worked with some of the BEST educators in the world.

    Cons

GRPS higher ups and human resources staff do not care about retaining quality teachers. The pay scale for teachers under 15 years seniority is the worst in Kent County. Many principals have never been teachers, yet they are trained to evaluate teachers and provide professional development to their staff; social work and business degrees must be good enough. The GRPS "cabinet" have been out of the classrooms and out of school buildings way too long to understand what the real world is like. This job is HARD and STRESSFUL and takes many years to find that healthy work-life balance.

    Advice to Management

Teachers might want to work in GRPS, but for the sake of their home and family life simply cannot afford to.

I worked at Grand Rapids Public Schools full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Had new and up dated training for teachers.

    Cons

Spend a high percentage on administration than other districts They gave teacher more students than other districts. Then when discipline challenges arise in the classroom the teacher is blamed.

    Advice to Management

Realize that teachers are your greatest resource and the number of students they teacher at one time dose affect their performance.

Move to Cuba and seek refugee status you overpaid, liars. You milk the public. Have you no shame. I cant even.
