I worked at Grand Valley State University part-time

    Pros

It is good for college students who are going into business. I was given the opportunity to do data analysis, general office work, and attend meetings. I had flexible hours.

    Cons

The pay was quite low, and the student positions were contingent on attending Grand Valley full time.

I have been working at Grand Valley State University full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Growing vibrant university in a time when other institutions are struggling. As a public university, GVSU provides access and affordability for students across a financial spectrum.

    Cons

The adjunctification of the profession is widespread, and though it may not be as severe of a problem at GVSU, it is certainly present. Aspects of campus culture have improved from being very conservative in the past, to less institutionally conservative.

    Advice to Management

Professors are increasingly joining the faculty from institutions whose culture highly values research. Although we can't change the mission of the institution, it would be useful to provide more support to faculty who are deeply invested in research.
