I have been working at Grant MacEwan College as a contractor

    Pros

Great pay and a positive work environment.
20 min commute from west end.
    Recurring seasonal contract

    Cons

seasonal contract means 4 months unpaid downtime every summer.
little professional development spent on staff considering it is an EDUCATIONAL institution.

    Advice to Management

The sink or swim attitude of training is highly unprofessional and makes the front desk a perpetual rotating door regarding qualified staff.

I have been working at Grant MacEwan College full-time

    Pros

Decent benefits. Some really excellent departments and people. Self-directed learning, professional development opportunities very much supported.

    Cons

Very unstable work environment. Work isn't valued as much as prestige. Senior leadership tends to lack in managerial ability, limited skill of focus on support to develop it, no mentorship models of programs available. Many positions without union representation. A huge 'us versus them' mentality between non- and academics.

    Advice to Management

Develop a leadership training onboarding process, and ensure continued skills development throughout appointments. Encourage an environment of full collegiality regardless of rank or role.

I worked at Grant MacEwan College full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Vacation - 3-4 weeks to start plus the university closes for a couple of weeks around Christmas.

    Cons

Subject to provincial government funding changes. Programs which were previously promised government funding had to find new options with the economic downturn.

    Pros

I had access to the library while I was an employee, and the service staff were helpful.

    Cons

I think I was passed up for interviews for an internal job postings that I applied to. For some reason, the manager of the dept. I applied to work for told me very informally that I wouldn't be given an interview.

    Pros

Educational institution with a relaxed atmosphere.Plenty of room for advancement if you work hard and show initiative. Good pay and benefits.

    Cons

none that you wouldn't find anywhere else-cliques/ office gossip

    Doesn't Recommend

    Pros

Great vacation benefits - 4 weeks plus Christmas for just over 5 years of service.

    Cons

There have been huge changes within the University in the past year (financial, student systems), and the roll-out has been far from smooth.

    Advice to Management

Management is underwhelming at best - not progressive or understanding of work-life balance. I know staff who have been here 20 years and have never had a performance review. There is virtually no chance of advancement.

    Pros

Grant MacEwan is centrally located the campus is great to work in. The benefit package is quite good and the pension is great (LAPP).

    Cons

There needs to be more attention paid to areas that are undergoing changes to ensure that the employees are not being over worked and have the proper support.

    Advice to Management

Management needs to be more aware of their employees workloads especially during times of change and employment shortages.

    Pros

    work life balance, benefit package

    Cons

anonymous, no recogntion, disconnect between senior management and the business at hand

    Advice to Management

take some business and management courses, get to know your staff, promote less based on perceived personalities and more on merit and ability, be less aloof, show an interest in what the function of the place is all about or retire all ready and let others more interested run the place.
