I have been working at Grant Thornton full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

-Great people to work with, everyone is inclusive and friendly. -The work/life balance is good. Hours are busy, but manageable. Our Flex Time Off policy gives us unlimited time off as long as we are maintaining certain percentage of chargeable hours, which is not hard to do. -Great culture. GT has really stressed culture in recent years. We strive for Collaboration, Leadership, Excellence, Agility, Responsibility, and...

    Cons

-It is public accounting, so obviously hours are long (55-70 hours during busy season, 35-50 during off-peak times) -Travel. I am fortunate and only travel about 25% or less, but I know people who are on the road a lot.

I have been working at Grant Thornton full-time for more than 4 years

      Pros

Mostly all great people who are willing to help/mentor. Many opportunities to work on different types of engagements (speaking from advisory standpoint)

      Cons

All the requirements of larger Big4 accounting firms, without being able to drop Big4 on your resume. Benefits not great when compared to others in the industry. Recent "staff reductions" have really killed morale

      Disapproves of CEO

I worked at Grant Thornton full-time for more than 4 years

      Pros

Flexibility of working from home, FTO basically unlimited as long as you get close to your utilization goals (but when PPMDs in forensics can’t sell any work that makes it tough!), my team members made it enjoyable, Pay is decent

      Cons

PPMDs in forensics can’t sell work so no one meets goals and people get laid off, bonuses are low, raises are basically inflation if you aren’t up for promotion, no fun firm trainings EVER (and they wonder why people get to manager have can’t manage people, or no one knows how to do basic conflict checks, ACEAs, engagement letters etc.), they put no money into investing in people to learn their own jobs like big 4 does

      Advice to Management

Put money into teaching employees how to do their jobs, otherwise they get to higher levels and they have no idea what they’re doing, it’s a flawed system. Start laying off people who bring no value like associates and senior associates who can’t do anything for themselves, instead of laying off people who bring value into our extremely well liked among colleagues and clients.

I worked at Grant Thornton full-time for more than a year

      Pros

Opportunity to work on a variety of different types of clients and different teams.

      Cons

Sometimes stuck on one task for a long period of time and sometimes teams would have clicks already created making it more difficult for newer members.

I worked at Grant Thornton full-time for more than 2 years

      Pros

We didn't have much business when I worked there, so I listened to podcasts all day.

      Cons

We had to sit through these ridiculous weekly meetings where we used the most buzz words possible to describe how we were helping out the company. Spoiler alert: everyone was super boring. Any type of somewhat controversial opinion was thoroughly discouraged. They force you to go through an "Unfreezing Session" where you sit and tell your feelings to stranger coworkers.

      Advice to Management

Thaw out the corporate environment, allow your employees to have personalities.

I worked at Grant Thornton full-time for more than 4 years

      Pros

Maternity leave People are nice and it is very relaxed and low stress.

      Cons

FTO is used against you during reviews but they won’t tell you how much is an acceptable amount - just be the “same” as your peers. The ambiguity makes it difficult to manage. Absolutely no growth and no opportunity for any admin staff. Admins are not a part of the team. Annual raise is not merit based (maybe 3%) I was told “if you take on more work all you’ll be getting is more work” by a partner who was giving me...
