I worked at Grant Thornton full-time for more than 20 years

    Pros

Huge investment in changing the culture Awesome CEO Great vision and values Amazing people A really fun place to work despite being a bunch of accountants and consultants!

    Cons

Partner attitudes still need to change in a big way. There is too much in-fighting still over who serves which clients with what services. Significant conflicts arise that seem so unnecessary when the good of the client is what matters most. Confusing manner of organizing services internally. Also creates unnecessary in-fighting and tension. Tensions rise over which service line should be providing which sub-service....

    Advice to Management

See Cons. Fix PTO policy and associated administrative approval process for taking time off. Work on further revisions to Advisory offerings to make sure it is more clear as to which subservicelines take the lead on what type of work. Address cultural barriers at the Partner level that negatively affect how people resources are allocated to proposal opportunities and service delivery.

I have been working at Grant Thornton full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Intellectual curiosity, enthusiasm, boundless energy, cooperation and collaboration

    Cons

The disparate systems provides a crazy poor experience - especially when it is largely a DIY approach. I spend more time trying to figure out the system functionality (sales, billing, service agreements, etc.) and enter in the right information than I am with servicing the client.

    Advice to Management

Invest heavily in an enterprise/integrated system (ERP) and provide onboarding that introduces these applications.

I have been working at Grant Thornton full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

There is flexibility in schedule with an emphasis on culture and work life balance. The clients are the right size and complexity to provide the right challenges to a growing and experienced professional

    Cons

At the stage of Senior Manager there does not appear to be a clear path or transparency on projected path to partner. There is uncertainty on whether you will be partner or if you are being exited from the firm.

    Advice to Management

Greater transparency on performance status and plans for the future. Actually engage in the process and come to the collective right answer and then communicate that message out, frequently.

I have been working at Grant Thornton full-time for more than 9 years

    Pros

There is work flexibility, although you do have to get formal approval for time off. Company culture. Washington tax office.

    Cons

It is high demand like all public accounting firms. I think they are slightly below market pay. Less respect if you're from a smaller office.

I worked at Grant Thornton full-time

    Pros

Great people. Competitive salary. Ability to leverage knowledge and skills of a large firm's network and brand. Promotion at the earlier career levels (e.g., Senior Auditor, Manager) is based on skills and experience.

    Cons

Work-life balance can be a challenge. Very relationship based at the higher career levels (e.g. Senior Manager, Partner). Promotions at these level are weighted more heavily on internal relationships than skills and experience.

    Advice to Management

Continue to build on the Grant Thornton Brand. Recognize and promote individuals who have skills and experience that generate revenue for the firm versus those who are internally "liked" by Senior Leadership.
