I have been working at Granular full-time for less than a year

    Pros

The PEOPLE are some of the nicest humans I have ever been around, wicked smart, and all genuinely passionate about their customers and the industry. Teamwork is a core part of the business, and colleagues from different parts of the company are willing and eager to collaborate to help provide the best experience for our clients. This company is on a MISSION to change the farming industry for the better and to make tools that work effectively for farmers - it's exciting to see everyone so eager to drive this company/product/our clients business's forward. The BENEFITS are amazing - great pay, great time-off, and I love the ability to work remote if need be. I also love the overall management style (no micro-management here).

    Cons

The onboarding process is self-lead for the most part - if you have questions, reach out to helpful colleagues! A lot of internal tools employees have access to = a lot of internal tools to learn. Again, helpful coworkers make this more manageable. Teams spread out between 3 cities limits some in-person collaboration, but its not as bad as you would think - I meet up with colleagues from different offices every-other-month so far, am in constant communication through Slack, and in video meetings to make the distance less of an issue.

I have been working at Granular full-time

    Pros

Office is in a good location.

    Cons

Very conservative benefits that are not competitive with the Bay Area: Healthcare • Premiums for employees are NOT 100% covered • Only two Blue Cross Blue Shield plans to choose from, both of which are HSA plans with very high deductibles • No option for Kaiser Permanente • No One Medical membership Commuter Benefits • There is no pre-tax commuter benefit Vacation • 3 weeks of vacation vs. “unlimited” PTO

I have been working at Granular full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Get to work on big, hard challenges that have real impact Passionate folks who want to have best platform in all agriculture Really smart, hard-working colleagues Feels like rocket ship growth even post merger, given all the hiring Startup environment with fast decisions and sense of ownership, but with resources of large company

    Cons

Integration pains around some of the HR systems are annoying Getting farmers to embrace software can be tough Speed of decision making can be tough to keep up with at times

    Advice to Management

Continue to focus on creating value for farmers as more resources and priorities are introduced

I have been working at Granular full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Company trajectory: Granular is prime to be the leading provider of Farm Management Software, and the excitement among employees is contagious Leadership Team: Granular is led by a veteran leadership team who is transparent with company goals and who inspires confidence for the future Culture: From a fully stocked fridge to an open collaborative workspace, Granular's company culture is all you want (and more) from an "SF start-up." Plenty of fun events, happy hours and cute dogs running through the office. Compensation: Extremely fair and competitive for this size of business

    Cons

The same cons that all successful SF start-ups deal with. Not enough floor space for a rapidly growing team.

    Advice to Management

    Keep doing what you're doing!

    Pros

    - Ag is one of the worlds largest and oldest industries, so there's huge potential for disruption. - Funded by the best VC firms in Silicon Valley - Executive team is experienced in building SaaS companies - Lots of exposure to multi-team collaboration in sales, marketing, and product -They reward employees based on performance, not duration -Clear career path -Great company culture - everyone shares the vision of building a great company while helping farmers feed the world - Competitive comp and benefits - Still a young company with lots of potential as we expand

    Cons

The fast pace and high expectations may not be for everyone

    Advice to Management

Invest more in exposing the non-ag employees in SF to farming. Farm visits as part of the on-boarding.

    I worked at Granular full-time

    Pros

The industry and the space that the company operates in is interesting. The customers are interesting. Good location. Decent snacks.

    Cons

This company follows the "at-will" employment to a T. They don't give you even a reasonable amount of time to come up to speed with the new industry, company and challenges. They expect miracles on day one. And if it doesn't suit them or their timelines, they'll get rid of you. Granted, it is an early stage start-up and there is a need to be aggressive, but not at the expense of your workforce. No wonder many good people have also left the company voluntarily. There is no culture here, no one cares about the employee and the atmosphere is cut-throat. The leadership team thinks they have a grip on the situation but they don't. They've also had the wrong people with the wrong skills on several key positions and several inexperienced people heading key departments.

    Advice to Management

Treat employees with respect, not as a resource you can toss out. Your hiring practices need major fine tuning. You shouldn't be hiring people who you think will not be a good fit or successful in the first place. Set employees up for success, not failure.

    Pros

Role is very autonomous and we are not micro-managed. Love the "see something, say something" attitude that we have and enjoy the fast-paced environment. You won't get bored!

    Cons

Not a whole lot of process yet (company is young), which is good but can be frustrating at times.

I have been working at Granular full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Data science at Granular is both intellectually and technically rewarding. Interested in how the modern food system works? Environmental impacts of farming? Love geospatial and financial time series data? Work at Granular involves it all. Data science at Granular is comprised of a small team of sharp people that does a good job of balancing freedom and communication. Work is a mix of benchmarking and modeling and the team has access to advisors to keep us sharp on the latest research in agriculture and economics.

    Cons

It's a startup, so systems are constantly in flux and organizational systems are still in the process of being built. Requires independence and flexibility.

    Advice to Management

Data science feels isolated at times, and sometimes we get complaints that the rest of the company doesn't know what we're working on. Finding ways to keep us integrated with the rest of the teams (either socially or technically) would be a plus.
