I have been working at Granular full-time for less than a year

    Pros

    - People here at all levels are passionate about serving growers...company has very deep domain expertise in agriculture, permeating all aspects of day to day work - Company cares for employee's opinions and development and seems to work hard at soliciting and incorporating them - As a relatively new employee. I found the entire onboarding process very thoughtfully conceived, with many HR and Dept employees owning specific roles and an comprehensiveness that helped me get up to speed very quickly. I found this a good indication/signal of good things to come...

    Pros

Employees are working on a product that is innovative and impacts customers in their local markets and on a global scale, which truly makes time spent at work meaningful. The people here are incredibly intelligent in so many different areas - agriculture, product, software, customer experience, people ops and more - literally so much knowledge in this company that we all can learn from no matter what role we are in. Leadership is transparent, communicates regularly and thoroughly, and trusts their people. Professional development is a focus at all levels. Dedicated L&D resources and planning for all employees. It's not just talked about; leaders and others want to help you get to where you want to be and provide opportunity to help with that. Office space is full of natural light, plenty of comfortable break out areas to work independently or in small or large groups, game rooms, and a kitchen stocked with tons of healthy snacks, treats, and large variety of beverages. Casual dress code! Pet friendly offices! Flexibility to work from home when needed and/or the hours that work best for you. Benefits are very competitive. Med/dental/vision pricing is very reasonable with several options to choose from. Flexible Time Off policy, and many holidays observed. Maternity & Paternity leaves are generous. 401K program is great.

Change is constant here, but if you're comfortable with that and can embrace and understand why changes happen, you'll be fine.

I have been working at Granular full-time for more than a year

    Pros

When I last looked for a company, I was tired of the San Francisco churn machine. I was looking for a place that I could land and feel good about staying for a long time. That place is Granular. The company culture, benefits, FTO, are all icing on the cake.

    Cons

Agriculture can be tough and very seasonal. The company does an ok job today of molding deliverables and quotas to this. There has been some effort to dial it in.

    Advice to Management

I think that the company would benefit greatly from a layer of front-line managers that focus solely on their individual teams.

    Cons

Integration pains around some of the HR systems are annoying Getting farmers to embrace software can be tough Speed of decision making can be tough to keep up with at times

Continue to focus on creating value for farmers as more resources and priorities are introduced

    Pros

Data science at Granular is both intellectually and technically rewarding. Interested in how the modern food system works? Environmental impacts of farming? Love geospatial and financial time series data? Work at Granular involves it all. Data science at Granular is comprised of a small team of sharp people that does a good job of balancing freedom and communication. Work is a mix of benchmarking and modeling and the team has access to advisors to keep us sharp on the latest research in agriculture and economics.

    Cons

It's a startup, so systems are constantly in flux and organizational systems are still in the process of being built. Requires independence and flexibility.

    Advice to Management

Data science feels isolated at times, and sometimes we get complaints that the rest of the company doesn't know what we're working on. Finding ways to keep us integrated with the rest of the teams (either socially or technically) would be a plus.

I have been working at Granular full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Granular is on the leading edge of software and analytics in agriculture. Great team. Talented people working with purpose and on a mission. Get to interact with high level farmers everyday. The company is going to keep growing, so the job evolves and there is lots of room for increased responsibility over time. The culture is a unique blend of Silicon Valley startup and Rural America production agriculture.

    Cons

Have to be willing to work with uncertainty and change. The business is adapting every day. There is not a known process for every job. Sometimes it's on you to "figure it out". There is a good amount of training, and people are always willing to help. That being said, you have to be willing to get your hands dirty and dive right into your job (with or without all the answers).

I have been working at Granular full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Everyone who joins this company believes in the mission to help improve the lives of farmers. It is an extremely driven group of people who push each other to be better. There is no such thing as asking too many questions or bothering anyone on your team or in the company. Everyone is willing to help. If the individual succeeds, the company succeeds. If you have an idea, you can pitch it and run with it. The company moves fast and is willing to give well-vetted ideas a shot. Since the company is growing, you are able to move up relatively quickly if that is one of your goals. Managers work with employees to sync individual and company goals. High level of transparency once an employee of the company. Extremely interesting industry to work in. It is incredible to watch technology change the agriculture industry from a front row seat. The agriculture industry is a fascinating place to be, even if you are not with Granular.

    Cons

The company is working out process to adopt while balancing keeping overall procedures to a minimum. Typical growing pains of a small company prepping for larger scale.

    Advice to Management

Keep the high level of transparency and autonomy as the company grows. ... and more comfy sweatshirts!

I have been working at Granular part-time

    Pros

-Laid back work environment -Gain experience in Agriculture and Technology sectors -Lunch is provided -Opportunity for quick advancement

    Cons

-Gets busier and slows down some depending on season -Might have to deal with a disgruntled farmer from time to time

    Advice to Management

Continue to grow the office in Champaign. Farmers from the Midwest like to know the company isn't just another Silicon Valley startup.

I have been working at Granular full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    - Mission: at Granular, you feel great about the positive impact your work is having on our food system - Exciting technical challenges: the product covers a huge range of topics, from farming workflow management, geospatial analysis, financial projections and much more, so the work is very interdisciplinary. - Great team: Granular has a bunch of high performing, passionate, and mission-driven folks, fun place to work. - Flexible environment: Granular has a decent number of remote workers (and an office in the Midwest), and a super flexible PTO policy (untracked). This can be a con if you are scared to use it, but the management actively encourages people to take time off whenever they need it.

    Cons

    - Tough industry: agriculture isn't an easy industry to sell software in...historically the big seed, fertilizer, and equipment companies have given away software for free, so it is a change in mindset for the farmer to pay money for good software - Growing pains: as with most startups, there have been growing pains. As the team has grown there have been some organizational changes that have been for the best, but still painful to go through.

    - Be patient with the industry...it is clear that their is a huge opportunity here, and the company is well positioned, even it the industry takes some time to mature

    Pros

At Granular, you get to solve really interesting problems in an industry that is seeing a big growth in technology. Agriculture is extremely complex so you really get to apply your engineering knowledge to build robust systems. The engineering team is always looking to improve so if there's a system that's difficult to scale or maintain, they're willing to take a step back and build something better. Work is very impactful and everyone has an opportunity to create a noticeable difference. The team is full of smart people who are very friendly and willing to teach or help each other out with ideas and guidance. Leadership is also very involved without stepping on progress. The engineering team overall is excellent. Perks include unlimited vacation and flexible hours. Breakfast and lunch are provided via Instacart grocery deliveries and usually can accommodate most requests. Catered lunches are provided at least once or twice a week. Occasional offsites and happy hours for team building. Company also provides top notch equipment equipment for your workspace.

    Cons

It's a startup in San Francisco with limited funds which means the bar is set very high for employees to perform. It's not a place for someone to just get by. Expect to work hard during working hours and occasionally rise to the occasion during crunch time. Industry is very complex so you may feel lost understanding the system and/or workflows. Can easily be left behind if not ambitious and a go-getter. Learning curve to pretty steep and climbing it is not for everyone. Average startup perks, medical benefits. Could always use more pay. Company is still identifying it's culture but it's visibly moving towards the right direction.

    Advice to Management

Continue to grow selectively. We have a lot of hard work ahead of us and can use the right people. Keep building morale and culture up by encouraging everyone to have fun and enjoy what we're building. Sometimes it's easy to get too focused on goals and not enjoy the journey.
