    Pros

Will treat you like gold....at first...

    Cons

Reality sets in after about a year, when you learn how many vindictive females are actually in control of top management.

    Advice to Management

    Pros

Good learning opportunities. Great American University has many course offerings to help learn professionally and grow personally. They offer good benefits that include 401K match, health management intensives and financial education support.

    Cons

Company treats employees outside of the Cincinnati home office as second class citizens. Advancement in the organization is limited outside of Cincinnati.

    Advice to Management

Your most important asset is your people.

    Pros

    General work-life balance. Not a high-pressure atmosphere.

    Cons

Salaries are lower than competitors. Paths to promotion are not clearly defined.

    Advice to Management

Need to be more proactive on keeping salaries competitive. Also need to help employees take ownership of their careers by providing more training opportunities and by laying out ways they can advance.

    Doesn't Recommend
    Negative Outlook
    Disapproves of CEO

I worked at Great American Insurance Group full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The company pays well usually and has been in business for over 100 years.

    Cons

The company looks for ways to manage by reports and leaves relationships of staff and customers out of the equation. Senior management undermines the authority of lower level management and creates animosity among the staff. When there is a problem with a customer, they choose to be rigid until the customer threatens to leave (which they end up doing anyway).

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to business outside of your comfort region and trust the input of your staff and customers. Quit managing by report and take some time to get to know people you work with and do business with. Remember, the customer is the reason you even have a job.
