I worked at Great Clips full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Laid back. Sometimes considerate. Gives chances. Acknowledges victories. Daily pay. Bonuses based on performance. Customers already provided. Only a few locations make it easy for you to stand out.

    Cons

The pay is lousy. Does not deal with issues head on but instead allows them to continue which creates a hostile work environment. Gets involved in things they shouldn't and doesn't get involved in things they should. Goes back on promises. Does not investigate internal issues.

    Advice to Management

Pay your employees what they're worth. Trust in your superior staff members more. Learn to be humble.

I worked at Great Clips full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

fast pace, only does hair cuts and occasionally perms so more customers come in and out making it so you get more tip money. Their are lots of opportunity to move up in the company to eventually even corporate. you also make hourly plus commision plus your tips. and if you are looking for part time they usually are very flexible

    Cons

you only make 8.25 hourly so if you don't make much commision and you are in a slower location you aren't making as much money. lots of people quit and get fired so it makes it hard to have consistency and get your shift covered. in my specific syracuse location there was a bit of drama with in the employees and we are always short staffed and you pretty much always stay past your shift and sometimes dont get a lunch.

I worked at Great Clips full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

If you do your job and grab customers your experience will be as good as you let yourself make it. They offer bonuses and praise for just doing your job right. Customers will make your day. You get tips. There's a special stock of products to try on your customer to help you sell.

    Cons

If you're under 25 or under, they throw you to the wolves and wait to jump on you for mistakes instead of training you. The other stylists tried to train me as much as they could, leaving me semi functional.
If you call in, you're wrote up. It doesn't matter if you get someone to cover your shift or not.
They do not care about you personally. It's all numbers and those numbers aren't very good. (at my specific location )
If you try to be professional and leave a two week notice, do not expect professional response. You will be taken off the schedule immediately.

    Advice to Management

Please let franchises know they need to back ground check everyone. Please. Please let them know for the sake of new employees that want themselves and the shop to succeed as a whole, that work their tushies off to try to please unpleasable people. I hope to work for another Great Clips in the future. I love your brand ❤

I worked at Great Clips full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great education on cutting by manager
Great clips three day training was a little lack luster. I don't want to put it in cons because even though it wasn't great I am new and any refresher course is great but clipper cutting was barely covered which is the majority of their clientele.

    Cons

For Great Clips location means everything. My location was extremely slow and retention on stylists working there was horrible. Clients noticed and frequently talked about it.

Cutting Times -- I understand why cutting times are important and I understand doing a 15 to 17 min cut is doable but what isn't is including consultation, getting clients to and from the chair, showing product at register and getting them checked out in that time frame (Lets not forget about kids cuts too lol).

Coupons, coupons and more coupons -- I don't mind really just means lower tips and usually they don't come back unless they have more coupons. Clients would come in our location asking if we had coupons too.

    No benefits at my location
    Location was super slow
No consistent Schedules -- at my location the schedules weren't approved until the day before too

Working at Great Clips is almost like a punishment for wanting to do Cosmetology as a career. To me, a career means a set schedule and getting paid more than just .50 cents to a dollar over min wage.

But with that being said I did get really lucky with my manager and my cutting skills have improved immensely so it was a great first job!

    Advice to Management

Allow stylists to have a consistent schedule, pay them as if they have an education and career (Cause we do and we paid a lot for it), update your training and provide more on going education. The more you put into your employees the happier your clients will be and the more it will grow. Maybe there needs to be more education and over site with the franchise owners.

    Pros

very goal oriented and helpful in getting you there, workers feel like family. Tons of events to show appreciation to employee's.

    Cons

terrified to call in sick. ever! always short staffed , no extra pay for the shift lead position. Why accept more work for the same pay?

    Advice to Management

we are just people, people with kids, people that sometimes get sick and sometimes just have emergency's.

    Pros

Good salon training. you leave there as a better stylist

    Cons

No management training. You're expected to just figure it out. You sacrifice quality of life for an extra $1.50 an hour. Corporate has one set of expectations, the franchisee has another. You cant win.

    Advice to Management

Corporate needs a tighter reign on franchisees.
