Company is inundated with nepotism from the top down. Poor leadership.

I worked at Great Southern Bancorp (More than a year)

    Pros

    Easy work
    Relaxed environment
    Independent work after training

    Cons

    No advancement
    High turnover
Stress placed on key employees while others slide by doing the minimum

    Advice to Management

Pay employees better wages to keep the turnover low. If adding job duties to employees daily function, compensate accordingly at the hourly level - trying to make up for low hourly wages with occasional bonus opportunities is not motivating.

I have been working at Great Southern Bancorp part-time

    Pros

Great Southern is A great place for the entry level teller. They provide training and want you to succeed. The place that I work, we are all one big family, I have a great time working there! GSB is a great stepping stone for anyone wanting to advance in the financial world.

    Cons

Referrals are a big deal. Part times need 3 sold referrals per month where full timers need 4. This is coming around to count the ones that you sent as well, but this is fairly new. Also, you are pad poorly, but also you must think they hire with no experience.Because of my area, it was almost impossible to advance my career past the retail banking side.

I have been working at Great Southern Bancorp full-time

    Pros

The benefits are good. Most of the people are professional yet friendly. The company is growing by making wise business decisions as it acquires other banks. We just acquired a series of banks in Iowa and Illinois. GSB is growing!

    Cons

It appears that executive management has created a level of associate vice presidents (AVPs) to play hard ball against the lower level employees. The AVPs are often rude and disrespectful toward their subordinates. This may be by design or because the AVPs are over-worked. I'll allow for that. Either way, it makes for a very poor work environment and poor decision-making by management. There's very little room to move upward too.

    Advice to Management

Have the AVPs treat their employees with respect and if needed, give the AVPs a break by creating another level under them for upward mobility and decision-making.

I worked at Great Southern Bancorp part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good place to gain experience as a teller if you don't have previous customer service or finance experience

    Cons

Lower than average wages, tellers are kept on extremely tight leash as you're not even allowed to work on programs like word and excel

    Advice to Management

Good giving employees incentives like competitions for referrals, but need to give tellers better access to modern technology like Microsoft Office

I have been working at Great Southern Bancorp part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The interviewing process was good and very easy. The department I worked in consisted of about 15 or more co-workers. The co-workers were all nice. The manager and supervisor were very nice and understanding of scheduling restraints; they had no problem working around your schedule. The atmosphere was positive. The training was not too intensive and they start you at a good pace to learn everything.

    Cons

There were not many cons in my department. The major, and changing factor, was the pay. The pay was very low compared nationally and locally.

    Advice to Management

    Pay more.
