I worked at Green Chef full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Free lunch on Fridays and nice people in the office. Never felt overworked.

    Cons

The quality of Green Chef as a service and as a fun place to work has consistently decreased since HelloFresh bought out the company Q1 2018. Growth opportunity in the customer care department was severely lacking. The customer care department always felt like an after thought compared to the rest of the company. There was a disconnect. Eventually all Green Chef customer care jobs were outsourced to lower quality representatives in other areas of the country.

FULL DISCLOSURE - A lot of the previous reviews regarding engineering are mostly true. HOWEVER, I'm the second longest-standing engineer at GreenChef and I can say the engineering organization has gone through a major transformation after the acquisition by HelloFresh in summer 2018. What was once a severely understaffed, poorly managed, tech-debt ridden org is now a growing, thriving, very cohesive team. We still have tech debt (who doesn't?), but we've gone to great efforts to deal with the major, crippling parts that used to hinder the company. We've been splitting older monolith applications into services and rewriting front-ends in newer frameworks. Honestly, it's a very exciting time to be in the engineering org at GC. Pretty much the entire engineering team here is new after the initial fallout from the acquisition by HelloFresh, and the engineering leadership is loved by all. It's a very fun, productive, supportive atmosphere, and I've quite a few new friends through the new hires! The org has grown from 5 engineers to 20-25 at this point, and we anticipate continuing to grow. As for personal growth, I've been learning a lot! This is mostly due to the tackling of tech-debt and migration of old services/databases. It comes with a lot of exciting challenges. While engineering used to be second thought at GC, HelloFresh brought the opposite mindset - engineering is a primary concern and one of the most important orgs for business impact. It feels good to be a part of a team with that kind impact, and we see the fruits of that impact regularly.

    Cons

No electric car chargers. Some people have to crank their stand-up desks.

I have been working at Green Chef full-time for less than a year

    Pros

I saw another review on here (Jan 6th 2019) that seemed like a bunch of outdated information not sure who wrote that because we haven't had free lunches every day here since before I started. So I made an account just to rectify that: - Right now the engineering org is helping lead the company in its ability to bring success. Since I've started, the team has doubled in size and is tackling the huge issue of bad legacy code while also iterating on great features. - The engineering team has great camaraderie which helps to get through these issues. In the six months I've been here we have already transformed a lot of our systems. Including starting to get away from Angular 1.5 (yikes) and Node 0.10.26 (double yikes). - I find there are a lot of opportunities to grow as an engineer. There is the perfect balance of cooperation/sharing skills and individual work. - I know that I will always have input into the technical decisions the organization makes. The team will often have the opportunity to discuss in depth the merits of a certain technology or direction at length, building prototypes in competing tools, etc before a decision is made. At the same time, decisions that need to be made quickly often are, and it doesn't feel like we are hamstrung by decision paralysis. - A lot of resources have been poured into our department since I started and it is really showing. - I feel like I have the opportunity to direct my career in a way that fits with my personal and professional life goals. - Managers and leaders have been extremely attentive to what I want out of this job.

    Cons

Technical debt. It seems like the previous engineers were flying by the seat of their pants most of the time trying to take their product to market. It definitely shows in the codebases. Free lunches only on Fridays now :( (catered by local restaurants)

I worked at Green Chef full-time

    Pros

    Free Lunch (albeit bad food)

    Cons

Delusional leadership and culture. Privileged, all-caucasian staff with hilarious, lofty, far-left political views. An astounding amount of technical debt. The technical / engineering foundation was built by people who had no idea what they were doing and the effects of this are obvious. Unqualified and understaffed engineering organization. If Hello Fresh was smart in their acquisition, they would dispose of the entire engineering organization. Do yourself a favor, and AVOID working here as an engineer. You will learn and gain nothing, besides a career set-back.

I worked at Green Chef full-time

    Pros

    - Catered lunches on Fridays - Large discount on delivery meal kits

    Cons

The biggest issue at Green Chef was the leadership team. They made working at GC a high stress experience, and unfulfilling due to lack of direction and poor communication. - Direction from the leadership team is non-existent, everything is done reactively and there are no guidelines or set expectations. - Feedback on personal performance is not a priority and seldom received. You are expected to set your own goals and evaluate yourself on a quarterly basis. - Managers are overworked and underappreciated by leadership. They are not being given the resources required for success. - There is a lack of synergy between the departments within Green Chef, as well as their parent company HelloFresh. Departments work very independent from each other, making collaboration difficult. - Applications and tools are also mismanaged and used inefficiently - different teams use various applications that offer the same functionality. Using project management applications as an example, one team might use Trello, when another team might use Wrike, and another uses Asana. There is no standardization enforced from the leadership level. - There is blatant favoritism of certain departments/teams over others, basically anything related to tech or engineering gets priority over everything else. - For most teams morale is very low, especially after the acquisition by HelloFresh - Mediocre benefits, and no retirement options. Leadership routinely dodged questions pertaining to 401k or other retirement plans when questioned. I would not recommend anyone consider working for Green Chef.
