Pros
Great benefits for all employees
Cons
None the company is great
Hey it's always nice to hear positive input - short and sweet though it may be! In the future it's always helpful to hear specifics so please feel free to let me know, here or elsewhere, how we can continue being a 5-star company.

Pros
Leadership doesn't really know what's going on, so it's a great place to coast and do minimal work Applying for jobs with Greenhouse is better than Workday
Cons
Greenhouse constantly talks about DE&I with little action. Majority of execs are white, majority of departments are white. POC are propped up in All Hands and used as tools to display "inclusivity". Most of which were fired in the last lay offs. Engineering is a boys club where employees are fed with golden spoons, and you'll have no hopes of climbing the ranks. People are afraid to speak up and criticize what's not working, which to me is the result of leaders not listening or holding space for dissent. Benefits like L&D, Sabbatical, even salaries have been slowly chipped away from workers while Dan and Jon vacation in Antartica. We laid people off and CPO is on Linkedin centering himself and how much *he* was hurt by this. Are you really this out of touch?

To start with the positive, I will say a couple things. Firstly, we agree that the greatness of Greenhouse is down to its people, not about myself. I have always maintained that and I'm glad you see it the same. Secondly, your passion for Greenhouse comes through loud and clear, and whatever else we may not see eye to eye on, I am proud to have started a company that elicits such strong attachments. What Greenhouse does, matters. We have had a profound impact on our team, on our customers, and to the broader community through our longstanding commitments to and investments in, making hiring better and fairer and it's clear that resonates with you and many others. It is a passion that I share. My response however would not be complete if I did not address the following points. While it is true that we have more progress to make in DE&I, I am proud not only in the increased diversity across the company but at leadership levels (including Executives and the board). Any honest and informed look at the data will show that. To the specific point that our layoffs disproportionately affected people of color, while it can feel that way I can assure you having looked at the data personally, it's simply not the case. The demographics of the company were largely unchanged across demographics (race/ethnicity, age, gender, tenure, and leadership in our ERG's) through this process. Having said that, our commitment to the ongoing work of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Allyship remains as strong as ever. There is more to be done (in this as well, I know we agree), and we will stay focused on doing that. Best - Daniel

Mostly great still despite recent disappointments

Greenhouse has used its own philosophy, hiring methodology, and software to hire an absolutely incredible team. I've never worked anywhere before where nearly everyone is brilliant and innovative within & outside of their role. Pay is about average for tech and benefits are stellar. Historically communication has been excellent but leadership has floundered a bit after the RIF (reduction-in-force) that occurred at the end of the April, which is the focus of my cons section below. DE&I is also well-funded and supported by the executive team, and the company is continuously transparent about demographics across the company and different levels of leadership which I appreciate.
Cons
Leadership has just been completely silent since a brief all hands a few business days during the RIF and pushed back the All Hands we were supposed to have for May, when we need their leadership, vision, and assurances the most. Unfortunately, some negativity and gossip has filled this void and frankly the way the current economy is being handled is making me question if Greenhouse is still the right place for me long-term. In addition to the silence post-RIF, communications surrounding the RIF were far less empathetic than expected and typical of Greenhouse. It kind of feels like a different company right now altogether. As someone else pointed out, our CPO is also active on LinkedIn about what happened while saying absolutely nothing to internal employees. Also, certain benefits have just disappeared without any announcement. We used to have Donut and internal sessions geared at bringing people together in a virtual setting, and they just quietly went away. The person who used to notify folks about anniversaries was also impacted by the RIF, and as a result anyone with a work anniversary since the RIF was just completely forgotten about. Overall, Greenhouse is still a great place to work, but I'm a little disappointed by the quality and lack of communication altogether over the last 1-2 months.

Shareholder-first, not People-first
May 10, 2023 - Anonymous EmployeeRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
The people; as so many others will say, the people at Greenhouse are the #1 reason why you will love working at the company. Mostly everyone is incredibly passionate about the mission of improving hiring, and are folks you'll create everlasting friendships with in and out of work. The product/services; the ATS and other hiring tools are second to none in the industry. Greenhouse has fantastic brand recognition and reception from recruiters, hiring teams, and especially candidates.
Cons
Executive/Board decision making; Greenhouse underwent a RIF in 2020 given the events surrounding COVID, and promised better planning to account for worst-case scenarios and emergency situations in the future. Instead, they continued to acquire another organization and accelerate hiring greatly in 2021 and 2022, all while the greater macro-economy still relatively suffered. Employees were told layoffs would 'likely not be needed' at the beginning of 2023, yet another RIF occurred in April. The rationale for the decision to proceed with a RIF was based around the 'declining economy'. Not once were the actions of the board/executive team driving unsustainable growth leading to this point called into question, nor acknowledged as a reason for the current state of the business. To my knowledge, none of the executives were affected in the RIF. 'People-First'; Greenhouse typically does a great job supporting their employees, emphasizing a people-first approach with different initiatives and offerings. However, in times of financial difficulty, they disregard this entirely. Examples of this include the systematic elimination/modification of employee benefits (e.g. removing unlimited PTO for non-exempt employees), closing offices, suspending promotion/mobility opportunities, RIF/layoffs, and more. The entire tone of the company shifted to a focus on dollars and cents, rather than people, around the time of their last major investment stake. Management/Senior Management; while promotion from within is facilitated, Greenhouse hired a ton of upper level management from outside the organization, many of which who were not suited for management responsibilities and did not understand the business. Decision making and collaboration in many departments became disorganized, confusing, and would constantly change. Compensation; many functions and departments are vastly underpaid, especially compared to other companies within software and HR technology. End of year reevaluations were minimal or non-existent, and a large reason why coworkers would leave.

Thank you for taking the time to provide such detailed feedback. Although some painful criticisms are leveled, it is nonetheless helpful to hear what your perspectives are. We will do our best to learn from these experiences and your comments are an important part of that. While I think some of the wording may be a bit absolute, nonetheless I do think there you make a number of fair observations. For example, it's true that after the initial shock of COVID and quarantine, we experienced nearly 2 years of unprecedented customer demand and growth. As this trend slowed and then reversed in the back half of 2022, we took a number of steps to reduce cost growth but, clearly, we could have done more. Always easier to see these things in hindsight but I agree that one lesson to be learned here is, when undergoing rapid growth, maintain a path to easing spend that minimizes disruption and pain. Also, it's true that internally our conversation has reflected this shift in emphasis. We are focused more on cost efficiencies now that the market has slowed. However I don't think that is the same thing as saying we are not "people-first", after all, in order to continue providing great career opportunities, strong culture, investing in DE&I, learning and growth, etc, the business must maintain sound economic footing. These are not either/or choices. In any event, thanks again for your comments, and your advice. It is well heard. And of course, I remain proud that despite it all, you view the people at Greenhouse as "the #1 reason why you will love working at the company." I agree!

Even after getting laid off, still one of the best places I’ve ever worked.

Incredibly talented coworkers, thoughtful and open leadership, interesting work, and a caring atmosphere.
Cons
They grew too fast for their own good and had to lay people off. More cautious planning and focus on retention would be good.

First off I am so sorry that you were impacted by our layoff. So many talented and wonderful people were impacted by this. I know how stressful that must be and wish we could have avoided it but no company is 100% immune from the economic cycle. Having said that I am so proud that you nonetheless had such a positive experience during your time here. I credit the people of Greenhouse for truly living our values of belonging, entrepreneurship and purpose. Your feedback and advice on future planning and growth are well heard for sure. I wish you all the best in your future endeavors and hope you find someplace where you again can deliver your best work. Yours - Daniel

Hello - First off, I'm sorry to hear you had such a negative experience at Greenhouse. As you note we hold ourselves to a very high standard when it comes to culture and employees and it seems that in your instance we were not able to uphold that. Second, thank you for taking the time to provide feedback. We use this feedback to try and improve and we do take it very seriously. Last, I do hope you have been able to connect with a workplace that better suits you. Best - Daniel

Pros
The work was easy. Some of the people surrounding my role were pleasant, and I made lasting friends. The company's attempts of being inclusive felt genuine, but still uncertain if they were or not.
Cons
Disconnect between leadership and ICs in my team; problem being we were a technical team without a technical manager. Accepted the role with the promise of professional development and advancement; after two years of excelling neither was provided. The manager I was hired under left two months into my tenure and my team was left without a manger for 4 months. New manager had difficulty understanding my role. Company felt too woke, to the point of antisocial; yet some of the same colleagues that made it feel that way perpetrated micro-aggression regularly. It seemed to be a theme that nothing was done about underperforming teammates

Solid Company, not keeping employees happy, overhearing
Feb 21, 2023 - Sales Development Representative (SDR)RecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Benefits, unlimited PTO Decent pay for sales positions When the market is good, inbound leads tend to come in more Remote work Great people
Cons
Even though you have unlimited PTO, you feel like you can never take a full week off and hit quota Unrealistic quota expectation in a terrible market Not much training after onboarding Over hiring sales representatives, instead of investing in the current sales reps, their solution is to just hire more, when the accounts are simply not there Won't get commission unless you hit 70% of quota Honestly an overrated company.

Thank you for your feedback; I feel that often the feedback that is the hardest to hear is among the most valuable. First, I'm sorry to see that your experience here was not very positive and that the sales opportunity did not seem to work out. Surely with ambitious goals and a tough market environment, I hear you that it can feel unobtainable. Nonetheless it's the company's job to make sure we field the right team and it seems that at least from your perspective, we did not find the right balance - not enough pipeline or support, for too many reps. That's a difficult formula to get right and I'm sorry it didn't work out better for you here. Nonetheless I'm glad to see your remark about "great people" - I agree and even (especially!) in challenging times, having top quality talent and a strong culture are more important than ever. I will take this feedback to heart for sure and I hope you were able to find a position that better suits you. I wish you the best in your future endeavors.

Mar 29, 2023 - Software Engineer in New York, NYRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Great work-life balance, strong business (even in current environment) and different paths into which it can grow further
Cons
There could be more pressure to deliver more and faster, sometimes. On the one hand, it's good for work-life-balance to keep the pressure low (or non-existent), but I feel there is sometimes room to expect more.

Thanks so much for making time to provide your feedback. First I'm really proud that you scored us a 5* rating, we work really hard to provide a top notch culture so I love it when that shows through in feedback. ALSO - your comments about workload are super interesting. I will certainly bring this up with leadership. We always want a sustainable and healthy culture but at the same time we are ambitious and have a lot going on. It would be great to see if there are improvements we can make to setting goals and work schedule that result in improved output without damaging people's lives! Best - Daniel
