I have been working at Greenspun Media Group full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

After interning there for 6 months while I finished a Bachelors degree, they're hiring me full time. All the people I've met are courteous, knowledgeable and happy to share with me as I learn the environment.

    Cons

    Starting pay a bit low

    Pros

Some opportunities to learn, most peers are friendly and get along

    Cons

Management is extremely territorial and closed to sharing vision. The revolving door of consultants that run the company contribute to a lack of vision for the future.

    Pros

Great talent working there, pay is competitive, and the publishers do everything to empower you to be successful. The events they through are some of the best in Las Vegas.

    Cons

Media at any level is a challenging sell these days. Print media is an even harder sell, there is a lot of pressure to sell print advertising as that keeps the ship moving forward.

I worked at Greenspun Media Group full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Company is part of a crumbling empire of family companies. Used to be great to employees, and really believed in inspiring employees. Loved the novel publications, the groundbreaking attitude and forward thinking of the family with this company.

    Cons

The company suffered economic losses from the crash in real estate, and they must have been severe. The company attempted to maintain employee benefits and salaries as much as practicable. Like all companies during the economic downturn in Vegas, the company navigated the difficult times as well as possible. They were not the only company hurt or the only company who had to make hard choices.

    Advice to Management

Get back to the core of what Greenspun Media is all about. The company pioneered In Business, Las Vegas 1, the Las Vegas Weekly, and several other publications that a town like Vegas needs with its small town feel but large population needs. The family understands the politics, the business climate, and how to help Nevada recover. They need to do what they do best - reach beyond what has been done before and show it can be successful.

    Pros

Was the top media company in Vegas now it has slipped. Paid better than most media companies back then in 2008-2009 but not sure now. They have trained the best writers, designers and media sales people working in Las Vegas today. Too bad they then sent them to their competitors and made it clear those employees are not welcome back. They built the best media titles in Nevada and then ran them into the ground.

    Cons

People come out of there as "abused children" for lack of a better analogy. It's an environment of favoritism, fear, general malaise and disempowerment. They make top down decisions that seem to make no sense. Compensation structures changed as frequently as 3 times a year. They are constantly churning upper management usually replacing incompetence with people even less qualified. They have hired publishers (and above) who have never worked in media much less ran a media company. In a small-market, relationship-driven media town they operate like they think their customers are beholden to them often completely disregarding their needs and wants. They ignore obvious market trends. They neuter their writers. As I said above they love to hire the best, train them to be better and then drum them out, lay them off or otherwise escort them right to the doorstep of competing media companies.

    Advice to Management

Return to the days when GMG was an environment where people could succeed. Customer relationships come first. When they are happy you can be happy. Until then there will be a continued decline in your revenues and you might get to a point where you are too far gone to save.

    Pros

    benefits package, location, new building

    Cons

Recent change in leadership, reorganization twice in the past two years, both based on recommendations from two outside consultants, neither from the Las Vegas area. Poor management decisions. If you like working in a mens locker room, it is the place for you.

    Advice to Management

Get to know your employees and what they have contributed before you make changes that affect livelihoods. Stop throwing your money away on consultants and listen to people who have been their for years.

    Pros

Positioned to be an industry leader if they will utilize their advantages. Has the potential to be a great family business.

    Cons

Unreasonable deadlines, workload has 5x'd in the last few years , upper management not listening and utilizing internal skills and advice. No real focus or vision.

    Advice to Management

Stop listening to outside consultants and listen to you your internal experts.
