I have been working at Greif full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The pay is decent, comparable with other companies in the area.

    Cons

You will work 10-12 hour shifts 6 days a week, every week. The supervisors do not care about the employees at all. They are here to make sure they get their quarterly bonuses and that's all that matters.

    Advice to Management

Show respect to your employees. Tell them when they've done a good job and don't just work them to death.

If you hire 1 or 2 temps and they don't stay, it's probably because they didn't want to do the type of work you are asking of them. If you hire 10 temps in a month and none of them stay, you have a problem with your management.

I worked at Greif (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Strong market position with nearly all industrial packaging lines. Global reach providing an ability to structure deals with major international customers to leverage supply chain. Solid benefits with middle of the road salary competitiveness. Past technology leader with strategic plant locations.

    Cons

Poor investment decision making by the executive board has led the corporation into new, under performing market areas that has bled the company of cash. Technology leadership and plant re-investment in core businesses has suffered as the organization retrenches to improve cash flow and lower costs. Hyper focus on lowering SG&A metrics has drained the company of experienced technical and commercial leadership forcing the remaining middle management to compromise customer satisfaction, facility maintenance and equipment re-investment. Necessary facility shuttering of unprofitable plants has been executed without appropriate global customer interaction causing serious market share erosion that could have been avoided with better planning. It appears as if corporate management is moving quickly to cut costs and praying profits will spike in order to prop up the numbers for a company sale.

    Advice to Management

Intense focus on corporate wide SG&A percentage reductions is being driven by over reliance on third party consulting (McKenzie Group). Key accounts (and employees) have lost confidence in the management team to execute strategic plans and provide reliable, timely supply. Competitors are moving rapidly to fill the supply void and locking up account positions with multi-year sourcing contracts to provide assurity of packaging availability. Improve focus on key employee support, customer satisfaction and plant excellence rather than personnel reductions to improve the business.

I worked at Greif (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great people in their plants, safety focused, continuous improvement focused, work life balance is pretty good, a lot of team work in the plants.

    Cons

Upper echelons of Greif are really disjointed, leadership is poor, the company makes no capital improvements or reinvestment back into upgrading equipment, budgets are often cut to meet short term goals. Greif promotes who they like, not who is best suited for the job.

    Advice to Management

Develop a focused long range plan and support it. Don't just give lip service to it.

I have been working at Greif full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Nice vacation and benefits package. Many of my co-workers are hard workers that are willing to put in the hours to do the right thing for the company. Commute to work is opposite of rush hour traffic for most employees which makes work life balance less stressful.

    Cons

Negative environment where bad behavior is frequently rewarded. Much inconsistency between departments as to expectations of professionalism, workload, hours, etc. Some of the company's key decision makers do not know enough about a situation to make good decisions. Lack of transparency.

    Advice to Management

Top management should stay aligned on goals and approach to ensure fairness and consistency across all parts of the company. Strengthen the HR area for better career planning for all employees.
