I have been working at Griffith Company full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

In what is arguably the most challenging industry to work in, Griffith Company is adaptable, innovative and open-minded to doing the best for their clients, employees and stakeholders. The company, for better or worse, is always trying to improve. Unfortunately, change takes time and is tedious, especially the way the company is structured. With that being said, there is a system to the madness - from field to office. Upper management (from a field perspective) allows employees to do their work and is always in support mode in assisting with arising issues. Many benefits, growth, professionally challenging opportunities and learning experiences for employees who are willing to do the work, put in the time and contribute to change.

    Cons

Multiple layers of managers and engineers due to divisions

    Advice to Management

    Hold the "C" players accountable

I have been working at Griffith Company full-time

    Pros

    1) Family oriented environment. Friendly and fun people to work with.
    2) Lots of employee celebrations (e.g. birthdays, baby showers) and employee bonding events (e.g. Annual Safety Picnic, summer barbecues, Thanksgiving Turkey Shoot).
    3) A rapidly growing community service initiative ("Griffith Company For Community"). Financial donations to several nonprofits, and opportunities for employees to participate in community service projects.
    4) The CEO (Tom Foss) and other company executives have invested in the development of our younger talent pool (e.g. summer interns and project engineers).
    5) Strong employee benefits package (e.g. medical, dental, vision, 401K, employee stock ownership plan, vacation, sick time).
    6) Leadership is actively involved in the California chapter of one of the construction industry's strongest professional associations, Associated General Contractors (AGC). Griffith Company is well respected by AGC California.
    7) Challenging and rewarding summer internship program. The interns are engaged in meaningful tasks, and have their day-to-day learning complemented by several activities (e.g. job site visits, trainings, 1-on-1 sessions with the CEO).
    8) Impressive portfolio of heavy civil construction projects throughout Southern California.
    9) Recent initiatives designed to better engage and develop employees (e.g. community service committee, new training sessions for project engineers and project managers, SharePoint site with company updates and essential work tools, Culture Committee).
    10) My ideas and contributions are valued by my boss and company leadership.

    Cons

Dealing with some of the same issues as other companies in an "old school" industry (construction), but aware of this and moving in the right direction.

    Advice to Management

Continue to invest in efforts to engage and develop our employee base. Better engaged and developed employees will contribute to a more positive work environment and increased profitability for Griffith Company.

I worked at Griffith Company full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

They are willing to pay at or above current salaries.

    Cons

Travel Per-Diem is too low, long hours and ridiculous meetings that very rarely produce anything for the project.
It has been said by almost every employee in the company that the owner is out of touch with reality and continues to bring more and more administrative foolishness to the company that does nothing but create more work for its already over worked personnel.
The "Open Door" policy is a joke and will certainly get you terminated if used. The new head of construction that the owner just hired is nothing short of a bully with just enough construction knowledge to be dangerous.
Everyone is running scared day in and day out and will just go along with everything the owner says rather than try and warn him of the dangers and pit falls of his off the wall decisions that mostly are non-productive to any project and in the field of construction.
Lower management is used as the "Scape Goat" for the bad decisions made by upper management. Unbelievable!

    Advice to Management

Either get the owner listening and turn the company around, or find work elsewhere.
Stop letting the client drive the construction bus and expecting to finish the project on time.
Stop all the ridiculous meetings and the idiotic employee/management reveiws, it does nothing to better the company and only adds more work on people who are already extremely busy with trying to run your disfunctional company.

I worked at Griffith Company full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Family atmosphere, comradery, team work.

    Cons

    lacked training of new employees

    Advice to Management

Prepare properly for growth. Don't hire your friends. Listen to employees when they tell you something is wrong. Don't punish people for going over your head when you have been warned time and time again something is wrong and do nothing about it. Don't reward people for bad behavior. Put the company and employees before your own personal gain. Lose the mentality everyone is replaceable, lots of time and money was spent to train millennials only to lose them due to lack of appreciation. Reward the hard working profit making employees rather than punishing them because others lost millions. Have an open door policy and LISTEN without there being repercussions from immediate supervisors.

    Pros

    Good Benefit
    OK Work Life Balance
    Some opportunity for Advancement
    Family Oriented

    Cons

    Lacks vision and goals
Culture benefits those who kisses-up to the upper management, talent stands out but rarely
Stuck in the past - Ideologically/Technically
    Lacks professionalism

    Advice to Management

Must find a way to appeal to the younger generation. There's a reason why some younger talents decide to leave after a couple of years. This company is seen as a stepping stone, not as a place where younger talents can grow.
