toxic work environment and studio politics

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Talented designers and beautiful, well-maintained office space

      Cons

Where to even start? Favoritism at its best, boys club and shockingly low pay. As a diverse, female former employee, I have been disrespected (cursed at) by the group managing partner in front of my colleagues for a situation I had nothing to do with. HR back in the day used to care for and help address certain unacceptbale situations with empathy and inclusion in mind. The same cannot be said about current people practices and HR leadership.

Top heavy Corporate Office masquerading as innovative design firm.

Dec 27, 2020 - Associate in New York, NY

      Business Outlook

      Pros

      Fantastic Computational + technical support.

      Cons

Recycled forms, lazy thinking and a failure to listen to fresh perspectives has propelled a once exciting firm into a unpleasant, exploitative and irrelevant Architectural operation. Your value here is equated to your ability to keep quiet and execute pedestrian schemes in Revit under high pressure, long hours and uncompetitive pay. Beware of donating your time.

Spectacularly Mediocre Men have Destroyed a Practice

Oct 19, 2020 - Designer in New York, NY
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

The DNA generated by Nicholas Grimshaw, and his early team, of an architecture born out of often ingenious techtonic solutions. They hired enough talented people that you were in good company but then they proceeded to waste every single one these talents and instead promoted compliant, uncreative mediocrity over them.

      Cons

Where do I start. There is much blame on mismanagement here on Glassdoor, which is true, the practice was struggling even before Covid, but a singular inability among the New York partners to think like high level deisgners and to cultivate that talent in the studio is behind their failure. Grimshaw is not a scrappy start-up, this is a name brand practice that these men have managed to run into the ground because they simply could not cultivate compelling ideas. The same four guys did and lost competition after competition and yet no one else was given a chance. Some of the partners bristle at people with ideas and self confidence, leading them to promote and cultivate a mediocre clerical staff. The proof of it is in the sorry state of the practice today. They tolerate eggregious behavior from management towards women, pay worse than the market and show no hint of the talent that made this firm great in the first place. Among Grimshaw's global practice New York was uniquely mismanaged bythe partners, a bunch of men who rest on their non-existent laurels, failed to corral ideas, are toxic to women and think potential clients just have to like them without compelling idea on the table, No the world does not want one more of your ridiculous canopies.

      "Top Heavy and Broken"

Sep 25, 2020 - Architect in New York, NY
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

The NY office does like to spend lavishly or should I say, DID like to spend lavishly on food and office outings but when it cam down to the work, the partners pushed potential projects away until we were begging for anything to work on. Then there was nothing and now the office is on a skeleton crew with entire support departments depleted and gone.

      Cons

Some rude partners, one especially comes to mind and isn't afraid to display his unpleasantness in front of the entire office. Very top heavy, and currently no projects to generate income which starved this entire office of not only work but eventually their jobs.

      Formerly great office

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Some amazing projects, great co-workers and office culture.

      Cons

Lost its identity over the years as the partners drove the office into the ground. Talent was absolutely wasted as they resourced people without much thought. Favoritism was rampant, promotions made little to no sense, and they dragged their feet to address any issues in the office. They'd often ignore or quietly dismiss problems rather than confront them.

NY office losing identity as partners mismanage their talented staff

Feb 8, 2020 - Architectural Designer in New York, NY
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

Great computational design team and very talented employees

      Cons

Partners have been inept at bringing in new projects. The all-male leadership has succeeded in nothing but losing the office’s identity. Blatant sexism has been manifested at the partnership level, with offensive statements made regarding their views on women having fewer leadership abilities than men. There was no consistency in the HR positions either and yearly reviews were skipped for a large portion of the staff. Truly terrible management.
