I have been working at Grinnell College full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

College supports work of VAPs, funding for conference travel, pedagogical support, (almost) same benefits as TT. Great location for young families, good work/life policies.

    Cons

Can be isolating place to live, especially for young single & queer professionals. Some departments are much better than others at supporting VAPs

I have been working at Grinnell College full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I have enormous flexibility, a fantastic boss, and the ability essentially choose what I work on during the day. I work with easy-going people who take their work seriously but have fun doing so. Overwhelmingly I have been treated fairly in all aspects of the work I do, and for the most part feel appreciated. I have had the opportunity to work in many departments, and have enjoyed that freedom.

    Cons

There is a huge separation in how staff and faculty salaries are handled. While it is likely necessary, that doesn't ease the emotional pain of seeing faculty receive 5-6% raises and staff receive 1-2% raises. Core benefits are outstanding, but there are some benefits that are not evenly applied across the institution. Things like summer 10-hour, 4-day work weeks are offered to some but not all departments. Some but not all departments have a dress code. Some but not all employees are encouraged to take advantage of professional development and wellness benefits. Management is very uneven. A few amazing managers/leaders, and a lot of really bad managers/non-leaders in leadership positions. Almost no room for career growth.

    Advice to Management

Stop talking, and start doing. Leadership seems paralyzed by the thought that the faculty or students will get upset with any decision (staff opinion outside leadership is discounted entirely). Require accountability at all levels of leadership. Implement a management training program. Encourage professional development outside of learning how to use technology. Develop a culture of continuous improvement rather than rote once a year employment reviews.
