I have been working at Gross, Mendelsohn & Associates as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Incredibly helpful and understanding. Very flexible with schedule during tax season (spring semester). Great work environment and extremely friendly.

    Cons

the only con would be the pay, $20 an hour, which is actually very competitive for the size of the firm, but doesn't compete with the larger national firms.

    Advice to Management

    Continue to be awesome

I worked at Gross, Mendelsohn & Associates full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Small firm with upward mobility for professional staff. Leadership tries to improve staff-level leadership but doesn't have a working methodology for implementing their desired mentor-ship style of leading and making leaders.

    Cons

Only way to advance is through a good relationship with a partner. Partners are silo'd and mostly concerned with 'their' clients. Sometimes unprofessional and old-school style of CPA practice management. Clique-oriented social environment with 'insider' and 'outsider' mentality. Structured counting of billable hours relative to bonuses and time-off and does not promote a good work-life balance or encourage true productivity.

    Neutral Outlook

I have been working at Gross, Mendelsohn & Associates full-time

    Pros

Approachable partners, managers, etc. The hours/work environment/culture is more laid back than what you hear at most other CPA firms. Teamwork among employees is good for the most part. Friendly overall environment. You get to work in a variety of industries rather than be forced to specialize, gaining valuable experience in the process.

    Cons

Relative lack of formal training. Relative small client size makes coming in under budget for certain jobs tough to ascertain.

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Gross, Mendelsohn & Associates full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Client focused. Quality service comes first. Cares deeply for employees because of strong values ingrained in the culture. Thinks win win. Generous bonus, referrals and comp time. Hard to imagine a better place to work.

    Cons

Public accounting is not everyone's cup of tea. Along with client service comes demands placed on employees. Flexibility and balance are in place to compensate.

    Advice to Management

Do not drift into a bureaucracy. Focus on team work, collaboration and problem solving. Keep up the growth trajectory, but do not lose what makes firm great.

    Pros

Honest people who work like a team and treat each other with respect. Everyone's opinion counts and you know how you are doing. They are flexible about when you work. As long as it gets done they do not micromanage their staff.

    Cons

Commute to the office is not fun since it is in downtown Baltimore but the firm is flexible about commute.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your people as you have been doing. Keep us up to date on where the firm is going.
