    I worked at Guardsmark full-time

    Pros

Good hours (If you get a good site). On time pay (As soon as you get Direct Deposit). Has longevity (If you have a good site and don't rub anyone the wrong way). Gives you uniforms (Found out from others that this is actually not very common). Vacation after a year (Might have to bug them to schedule it). Good for experience.

    Cons

I worked at this place for quite a while and saw quite a few shady dealings from time to time. Schemes to get other guards fired, clique mentality, mishandling of vacation requests, pay cuts, hour cuts, random schedule changes, facebook stalking and so on. The good thing was that by the time I left it was all pretty much phased out but it happened for quite a while. The one thing I do know is that you be on your deathbed...

    Advice to Management

Cut the immature behavior (That I'm sure goes on at plenty of other companies as well). Listen a bit more to your guards or at least pretend to.

I worked at Guardsmark full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Good culture, decent pay, decent benefits. The company treats you like a human being. They will often back you up in times of trouble.

    Cons

A little behind on the technology end of things. I would like to see the company allow direct deposit. When I worked there it wasn't allowed at all locations.

    Advice to Management

Keep supporting your Supervisors, you're doing well.

I worked at Guardsmark full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

If you get placed at a big client site you get most of the good perks of working for the company (Better pay, better insurance deals and better hours). Free uniforms. Easy job usually. Good for work experience. The only reason I'd recommend this job to anybody is that it's really just a easy paycheck. If you can't find anything better than it's alright. Just make sure you don't let anything go wrong with the location...

    Cons

Expect late checks when you start and continue to expect them if direct deposit is not available. Expect to have your hours cut if it will save a little bit of money. Don't expect a promotion. Don't expect a pay increase (Unless the company some how gets a pay increase and even then it's probably no going to be passed on to you. Crappy uniforms and long wait times to get...

    Advice to Management

Pay your employees better or at least reward those who show loyalty and go the extra mile. Get uniforms out in a timely manner, make sure paychecks arrive ON payday and are not MAILED ON PAYDAY. Train people better. Don't pinch every penny you get to the point where 20 dollars in the companies pocket is worth more than 10 dollars in the employees pocket. Create positions instead of reducing them.

I have been working at Guardsmark full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

You may like it or not but it's a job. Free but already used uniforms. Some sites offer direct deposit. You get 5 days vacation after 1 year of employment.

    Cons

No room to grow. If they promise you a rewarding career, believe me it's a lie. A little pay and of course no pay raises for officers. Guardsmark is so desperate not to give you over time.(Lipman and his buddies must make good money not security officers). The hiring process is ridiculous.! Just to give you an idea: 40 pages application, 500 psychological questions, Polygraph test, Drug test, Background check, you...

    Advice to Management

Lipman! Maybe it's time to stop sending stupid Guardsmark newspaper, a Christmas card and instead of that...give security officers a pay raise! I have no words to describe how cheap this company is.

I worked at Guardsmark full-time for less than a year

    Pros

They give you free uniforms, offer free health insurance, offer direct deposit

    Cons

Management is a joke! The free uniforms are very low quality and practically see through. The free health insurance does not qualify for the Affordable Care Act standards, so it's useless.

    Advice to Management

Become more involved with your employees instead of telling us I don't know on any serious questions we have about our benefits, and job task.

I worked at Guardsmark full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Big name firm can potentially impress future employers; uniforms are provided free; some health insurance for some accounts. Guardsmark was paying above industry standard wages when I was with them.

    Cons

Yes, watch your vacation pay! Branch office may retroactively deduct already paid vacation from check, or refuse to pay you outright. Lawsuits over these practices are going in California and Illinois. No direct deposit on most accounts/locations (some apparently have it now). Account managers are not security supervisors, since they may know nothing about your site, client operating...

    Advice to Management

Ira, you bill your firm as a world leader in professional security services, but you'd never know it the way key aspects of your business are being run. The annual Lippman Family greeting card was just another way of showing your rank and file how detached you are from the day-to-day people making you the money to have your office in downtown New York, not in Memphis. Guardsmark has skeletons in its closet that need to...

I have been working at Guardsmark full-time for more than a year

    Pros

If you do your job professionally you will be well taken care of and managers will be willing to work with you. I have heard several people complain about management not doing anything for them, and I've noticed that these are the same people who I see spending as much (or more) time trying to find new corners to cut as they do actually performing their job. Excessive laziness is not tolerated by any good company. And...

    Cons

It's true what they say about losing contracts to low bidders. We were losing several contracts at one time, which meant picking up "here and there" jobs and working part time for a while, but if you show initiative and show them that you really want the job (like I did), they will be much more likely to place you in an open position before someone else. That being said, your employment experience can vary quite a bit...

    Advice to Management

Improve the hiring and review process so we stop getting shady guards that freak out and/or disappoint the clients. Account Managers seem way overworked, so... do something about that, maybe? Also, those training packets and newsletters are a pretty ridiculous waste of paper. Just provide employees with an e-mail account and website access and use that for the training (or at least give the option). Join the rest of...

I have been working at Guardsmark

    Pros

Guardsmark, depending on the branch you work for, can offer some great clients. The client facility I'm assigned to treats the Officers very well, almost to the point were you feel like part of their "family" more so than Guardsmark. The company takes regular training on various security issues seriously.

    Cons

The insurance can only be described as better than nothing. It also may vary greatly on the client to which you are assigned. If your hours are distributed amongst different clients, each with different pay scales, expect problems getting your paycheck to reflect the correct amount. The company only offers direct deposit to those who work all their hours at certain clients....

    Advice to Management

Take both sides of complaints seriously, not just the side that allows you to be "politically correct." Take ownership of mistakes regarding pay, don't blame client's for not paying bills on time. Follow all of the GOR&I all the time, even the uniform section. Find a different uniform supplier that can actually offer a product that lasts longer than a year under normal washing.

I have been working at Guardsmark

    Pros

Sometimes you will work with a good team. The team takes care of each other covering for shift changes as needed or time off because the area supervisor will not care. The client company is more likely to appreciate the guards than Guardsmark will. You will get new uniforms if you pester the manager enough. You will have time to read or study if you are going to school especially on evening and graveyard shifts.

    Cons

Don't expect a raise, or direct deposit. Do expect problems with pay and partial paychecks. The insurance is a joke but only Lipman is laughing. The training is all cut and paste material not worth the paper its printed on. Good guards move on to bigger and better things ASAP. The vacation will be when they can give it to you not when you want. (one week after 1 year two weeks...

    Advice to Management

Mr. Lipman loves to put a picture of himself and his family on every publication stuffed with the checks and monthly training junk. Stop wasting paper and learn to use the automated systems thy might even save money that could help pay the guards so they can stay more than a couple of months.
