I have been working at Guest Services part-time

    Pros

    - Conveniently located in Washington, D.C. where access to Metro is easy.
    - Get to learn a lot whether you work in food service, cashiering, ice cream cart, utility, or in the kitchen.
    - Free food for yourself and co workers
    - Laid back managers and co workers (for the most part)
    - DC has a higher minimum wage than most states, so the pay isn't bad at all.
    - Scheduled for at least 35 hours a week

    Cons

    - It gets very busy, especially in the summer months. Customers can be sometimes be rude and arrogant
    - Many foreign customers who can't speak English and make it difficult to get work done
    - Favoritism among management and some have attitudes for no reason
    - Work on weekends and holidays
    - Lots of standing (but what can you expect from a cashiering job..plus you get used to it)
    - No service or wifi
    - AC can sometimes break
    - Smell bad after working there all day, like grease oil and chicken tenders
    - If you work ice cream cart you will be sitting outside in the heat.
    - Closing late after July 1
    - Temporary job, season ends in November
    - Location. As I've stated before, working in DC can be convenient but your only source of transportation will literally be the Metro. No parking, too much traffic and if you're not a public transportation person riding the Metro everyday can be a drag

    Advice to Management

Stop picking favorites among your employees and letting certain employees do things and get away with it just because they've been there longer or you happen to like them more. All in all, this was an average job but I wouldn't recommend it for something permanent. A lot of people quit after finding something better and I don't necessarily blame them. It's good for the time being but not something you want to be doing for the long run.

I worked at Guest Services full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

A priority is placed on promoting internal candidates for available positions. The company is growing so opportunities to advance are "real." Based on my experience, self starters and those who value a stable company will thrive in this work environment.

    Cons

New technologies, systems and processes are being implemented to ensure the business runs efficiently and reporting is streamlined. These types of changes are a process for all involved but work out great in the end.

    Advice to Management

Continue fostering the positive work environment and strong employee benefits program.

    Pros

Get full time hours, 8 hours a day with a 30 min unpaid lunch. Off on weekends. Eat lunch for free.

    Cons

Good for someone that's just starting out. No room for advancement & growth. Not paid enough for all the hard work you perform.

I worked at Guest Services full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

None as far as I know.

    Cons

Being a contractor we had to keep the government employee happy. Unfortunately he wasn't too bright and was prone to fits of rage over things he didn't understand. My first day I was told of a coworker who was one written warning from being fired. Overall the most toxic place I have ever worked in my 30+ year career.

    Advice to Management

Keep a closer eye on lower management as to how the workers are treated.

I worked at Guest Services full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I was able to learn important skills while living in a beautiful National park

    Cons

Not the most organized management, and should be aware of the difficulties of living on location

    Pros

Wonderful co-workers for the most part. Beautiful location

    Cons

Main office and year round staff are out-of-touch with standards for industry. Company does not offer incentives to stay. Company treats employees poorly, does not provide tools to clean or do jobs properly.

    Advice to Management

Guest Services needs to decide if they truly wish to have properties where customer service is required. They lack vision, sophistication and investment in staff training and basic tools of the trade. A serious re-structuring needs to happen to place them in 2016.
