Awful toxic culture
Jun 13, 2022 - Anonymous Employee in New York, NYRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Some nice people and hard working colleagues depending on the department, great benefits, world renowned architecture and education programs, working for the arts is great if you have a passion for it and can overlook the cons
Cons
Toxic culture - mean people with twisted priorities, awful morale - no farewell parties, happy hours, or any opportunities for engagement with colleagues, overworked staff that make up excuses for poor management, incompetent leaders meant to just fill spots and not actually provide any strategy (org has no strategic plan), terrible pay and performance management process that is working against employees/prevents raises, DEAI initiatives are a joke and do not address the root of the problem which is the culture starting at the top executive leadership, very high turnover - everyone who works here is half out the door and burnt out

Pros
-decent benefits which are still pretty expensive and you have to work quite a lot of hours to get them -flexible schedule -getting the inside scoop about the art and museum -resume builder -more relaxed dress codes compared to security guards, stipend for clothes/shoes
Cons
-You are expected to attend a monthly training day (virtual or onsite) to basically learn how to "talk art." This will quickly get exhausting as you realize this is just a way to get you to drink the corporate koolaid as they continue to severely underpay you. -Most guides have degrees, yet this role pays close to NYC minimum wage. I still can't believe it. -Constantly seeing lavish events and dinner parties in the works (which they will ask you to work) meanwhile there's no pay raises. Am I the only one who sees a problem with that? -You will be expected to work all weekend at no extra pay, while dealing with much larger crowds and responsibilities -You will be expected to earn a fire guard license on top of already basically being a teacher/security guard, again at no extra pay -awful supervisors that treat you like a child and tell you off for simply talking to your coworkers, or checking your phone for 2 seconds. Bonus points if you aren't white -Favoritism between supervisors and guards (bonus points if you're white). There could be a new guard who's barely worked there 2 months, and they'll be picked to work at a desk (where they can sit) or even offsite as opposed to a guard/guide who's been there for years -close to zero opportunity for advancement in the org unless you want to be a security supervisor in a few years, maybe -low morale and awful toxic culture. Going along with what another reviewer mentioned, there's not even an exit interview regardless of how long you've worked there -DEAI initiatives that are just there for lip service, as people are catching on and speaking up about their irresponsible culture and hierarchy I hope I've said enough. I wouldn't stay in this job for more than a year.

Beautiful architecture lacking in opportunity

The staff is amazing, the architecture, inspiring and the work is stimulating and fulfilling. It can be an amazing place to work.
Cons
The path forward, the path to a promotion is unclear. It almost seems arbitrary. Some people work here decades not getting a promotion while others are promoted multiple times, as a matter of course.
