    Pros

    Connections, People, Discounts, Music, People.

    Cons

Guitar Center stopped caring about Retail Associates

    Advice to Management

Leadership Development and hyping up your Corporate environment is cute and all, but your retail employees NEED YOU BADLY. They are your bread and butter, they are your face, they are selling for you, they are working long hours for you they are subject to ALL negative media and it's reprocussions, they are your work horses. Stop hyping the Support Center on LinkedIn as a great place to work, and start talking about Retail and the front lines. Remember you are a Retail company. INVEST in your army. INVEST in your retail associates. They need you, and you are not supporting them. This includes the Ops Support and Services crew at the Support Center who have come from Retail. You start at Retail, and the rest will follow and that will drive Support Center potential employee outreach. When people see you care about the heart of your business which are your stores... then maybe Guitar Center can be an awesome place to work again.

Flexable hours for the most part

    Cons

Depending on managers, the training was iffy.
Pretty overwhelmed at times with no one to help.

I worked at Guitar Center full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

There were many days I went home feeling happy and satisfied. I met most of my long term friends at GC either as fellow employees or even customers.

    Cons

On the other hand, there were just as many days, if not a little more, that I went home angry and upset. Most of the blame for this does not fall on GC's shoulders. It falls on the reality of working retail with the general public. There are many wonderful, kind people who shop at GC stores and are a pleasure to deal with. And there are lots of miserable people who have nothing better to do than go out in public places and ruin other peoples days. You tend to get a higher amount of these breed of people at a music store.

    Advice to Management

There's many things I wish GC did differently. But if I had to choose one, then you need to pay more money to someone who gets promoted and moves up the chain. Almost every time I took a promotion, I would get a paycut. In some instances it would remove most of the pressure of commission, but that shouldn't matter. A promotion is a promotion and you should be paid more. Period.

Thanks for the heartfelt review! The compensation aspect is something all retailers are looking at; specifically, as municipalities implement living wages it creates compression in the management... More
