    Pros

Depending on the location, Guitar Center is a great place to work. If you know about gear, love music, and working with musicians it's even better. The environment is upbeat, diverse, a lot of noise, and deal making. The Labor Day Sale when everything is cleared out of the warehouse and brought onto the floor is the best. Management is great at motivating and building rapport with the sales associates. Everyone is willing and ready to help you out, for a cut of the sale though.

    Cons

The only downside was the downside. Unless you have great connections in the industry, it's pretty tough to make a decent check on a consistent basis

    Advice to Management

    Keep doing what you're doing.

    Pros

    Selling musical equipment
    Making people happy
Discounts on musical equipment for employees
    Excellent product knowledge training

    Cons

Commissions are drawn against hourly wage
Some hours worked are when the store is not open and these hours are still used against your sales numbers

    Advice to Management

Do away with the draw vs. commission concept. You will attract and retain better quality of employees

Performance driven work environment. Must know how to sell to succeed.

    Advice to Management

    Fix the commission structure.

    Pros

There is plenty of opportunity to define your own income level and move up within the company if you have a solid work ethic and a willingness to learn. If you have natural talent as a salesperson and understanding of music gear you can go as far as you like.

    Cons

There is high turnover because of lack of work ethic or lack of drive to sell. Having to constantly train new hires on the floor slows workflow.

    Advice to Management

A longer hiring process and focus on new-hire training could make all the difference. Also incentives for top performers should be a focus.

    Pros

Great benefits, 401k, amazing employee purchase program and abundant opportunities for growth and upward mobility.

    Cons

Merchandise shortages and questionable pay for drum sales people.

    Advice to Management

    Hook up the drum guys.

I worked at Guitar Center full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

You get great insight into the world of Audio. Product knowledge helps you if you're in the music industry.

    Cons

Very competitive if you don't have a clientele. They drive on making sales and emails are a prime way to be top on the list in the company.

    Advice to Management

Help your employees as much as you can so that they can make as much sales as they can. Send the noobs clients and if they fail then so be it.... you tried,

I worked at Guitar Center full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great people--my coworkers are still some of my closest friends.
    Excellent and ongoing staff training.
Work becomes your life. If gear is your passion like it is mine, you will love it.
    "Burning"

    Cons

Being on your feet all day. Not a big deal compared to how much fun the job is. But the guys always complained about their feet hurting and good shoes were a must.
Heavy lifting. Everyone complained about back problems.
Work really becomes your life. Gear has to be your passion.
"Burning"--if you don't want to work open to close as often as once a week or more, this might not be your thing. Again, if it's your passion go for it. I used to hate leaving work even after "burning."

    Advice to Management

Keep it up. Management is the best.
