I have been working at Guitar Center full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Very flexible for college students, promotes from with-in and provides tools to be successful.

    Cons

Change tactics too much, Salaries are a little low. CEO seems to change periodically, no real stability yet.

    Advice to Management

Find a way to show stability in upper management so you can make GC the greatest place to work for future generations.

    Pros

Cool industry, fun people. Passionate about what they do. Can be fun at times.

    Cons

Corporate office. High stress level. Good compensation, bonus program for certain departments, but being retail, there is a lot of pressure, huge workload. Systems a bit of a mess.

    Advice to Management

Fix system issues. Hire more people to divvy up workload.

I worked at Guitar Center full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Not good, not bad. Everything is structured so you do the same thing every day. Person I was reporting to was fantastic but seemed to be very hit or miss.

    Cons

Fairly boring environment. Not allowed to be creative or go outside of your very narrow scope of work.

    Pros

10 cent coffee, can wear hats, 45 minute lunches, product training for instruments

    Cons

Very very strict on attendance and breaks, don't adjust schedule if needed. If you cant work that early, is basically "be late until you get fired then" kind of thing.

    Advice to Management

Work with agents more, be more understanding, lose the attitudes, new HR would be nice

I worked at Guitar Center full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Discount on gear. meet and work with some great people. You will learn a lot about music and the music industry.

    Cons

They will chew you up and spit you out. Its a cut throat high pressure sales job like car sales but with half the pay. After a few years you will have permanent hearing damage. If you have one bad sales week they will not hesitate to fire you and the guy next to you just for kicks. They don't care about you or your talent. Just sell until your'e fired.

    Advice to Management

Sales people actually work better when they are relaxed and not stressed. So take it easy on your employees and don't threaten to fire them every 10 minutes. The "up" system just let them sell or better yet remove sales goals all together.

I have been working at Guitar Center full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Fun crew and engaging work environment. Get to be around the gear you love. Helping customers find exactly what they're looking for is always satisfying.

    Cons

Pay is not competitive. Favoritism determines career advancement more than anything else. High stress and workload at times. Unprofessional work environment at times.

    Advice to Management

Communication needs to be better. Bring back a focus on sales that involves digging in and taking leads to pursue rather than advising associates to clerk whatever deals come in. Lead by the example you want your associates to model themselves by.

    Pros

Passion based industry, great environment, lots of gratification, lots of opportunities, fast moving, and a great resource for big business experience.

    Cons

Low pay, unrealistic goals, incredible work load, unstable, bad staffing, and overly modular scheduling (as in very difficult to plan anything around your schedule).

    Advice to Management

Hiring managers need more training in picking & interviewing employees. Metrics besides sales should be equally rewarded (system that benefits well balanced employees)

I have been working at Guitar Center full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Working alongside a sales staff comprised of incredible musicians and local industry professionals.

The ability to network with fellow musicians inside and outside of work.

Getting to inspire and educate first time musicians and customers new to the music industry.

Great insurance benefits for full time employees.

Fair vacation, sick, and unpaid time off.

    Cons

There is a lack of effective leadership from upper corporate management.

Flawed commission structure for sales associates.

Tools put in place to streamline and expedite the sales experience are completely ineffective and inefficient.

The training for new employees is minimal and there is no dedicated training manager.

Sales associates don't make commission for the first 90 days of employment but are required to make sales and achieve sales goals.

    Advice to Management

Invest more time and money into making your store level employees happy. The customer experience suffers because employees are frustrated and are not fairly compensated for their tenure, experience, or knowledge.

The employee website implemented to place orders does not work and needs to be updated to a better system. It takes way too long to create and fulfill an order and, again, the customer experience suffers.

Stop requiring your Non- Commission Sales Leads to hit a monthly sales goal without paying them the commission they duly earned on those sales. This takes money out of your sales associates pockets and is not a fair practice. I spend half my day making sales instead of managing my sales team and department and that money seemingly goes straight to the company.
