    Pros

Employee discount. Customers can always find a good deal that meets their needs.

    Cons

Illegal practices against employees which they lost a suit against. Extremely flawed commission system. Exploits musicians whether customers or employees. Some department employees will never make commission.

    Advice to Management

Change commission system, don't engage in illegal activities.

Thanks for the note, albeit inaccurate. We, in fact, have not been sued for our commission program and we do not employ illegal pay practices or exploit anyone. Our Sales Associates make close to... More

    Pros

Loved having Friday's off. Developed good working relationships with fellow co-workers.

I worked at Guitar Center full-time

    Pros

I worked alongside some great people and made some excellent connections working here. The discounts used to be great, too.

    Cons

Pay was not competitive, the company changed hands and proved to be unstable.

    Advice to Management

Learn to invest in your people. GC wouldn't be such a bad place if there was actually an emphasis on the customer experience rather than PC or GCGC apps.

I worked at Guitar Center full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The employee discounts on gear are great and they are understanding of musicians taking time off for gigs and tours.

    Cons

Low base pay, hardly any opportunity for raises, and commission structure is barely incentivizing. The employee turnover is very high and the company doesn't seem to care about their longer serving employees at all. There is opportunity for advancement to become a manager of some kind, but that is a huge increase in responsibility and a minuscule increase in pay. The structure and network of the company is very bad, which frequently results in delayed orders and things not getting done without significant follow through. That results in customers getting frustrated and leaves employees helpless.

    Advice to Management

Care more about employees that work there for a long time.

Thanks for the detailed review! GC is the only place I've worked that has a "Gig Leave" program, so that's pretty cool. Most of our Sales Associates make a blended rate of pay of about $15/hour... More

    Pros

Great company, flexible schedule, employee discount, & great management.

    Cons

System is way outdated and takes too long to navigate through. It's 2017 but the system is like from 1979. Even the customers get frustrated about it. Transparency with closing- Your schedule may say you close at 9:15 but its more like 9:30 or 9:45, so it makes it hard to make plans. Could give you more hours or offer fulltime. Though you request a day off, your usually put on the schedule ad have to stress if its going to be an issue.

    Advice to Management

Try to offer more full time positions and give more hours to the people who want to work more or need it. Be transparent about closing. Does anyone ever leave at 9:15? You could give incentives for top performers. Do something about the computer system. If everyone knows that its insufficient, why is there no initiative to improve it?

Flexible schedule. Willing to work around your needs within limits.

    Cons

Pay is okay. Sometimes there are unreasonable goals to be met for sales as far as goes. Operations is really nice but sometimes underappreciated.

    Pros

    Great employees
    Learned a lot about gear
Flexable hours for the most part

    Cons

    The pay was pretty awful.
Depending on managers, the training was iffy.
Pretty overwhelmed at times with no one to help.

    Advice to Management

Staffing is probably the biggest issue, forget about your bonus, and actually schedule what is needed in that department.
