I have been working at Gustavus Adolphus College full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Lots of good people, small community with the usual small town amenities, lots of events that are open to faculty and staff, and tuition benefit for dependent children. Nice locale that is close to the Twin Cities and Mankato, about 70 to 80 minutes each way. House prices are pretty low compared to the Twin Cities (average 100K to 250K). President Bergman is trying to turn things around and is the first really good president this school has had in 20 years or more.

    Cons

Poor pay, terrible benefits (they weren't bad a decade ago but for the past several years they cut back on benefits, especially retirement savings and healthcare). There is also a sky is falling aspect to no real raises (at most 2% but most years none, especially for support staff) for more than 5 years and in the same period more and more administrators are being hired as VPs, Deans, in addition to unfunded department "endowed chairs" that draw increasing $$ from salary pool. The system is really unfair and there is no incentive to stay except the tuition benefit but if you don't have kids or they are out of school then it's a dead end.

    Advice to Management

Pay more attention to wages for the custodial staff, dining services and kitchen staff, and the administrative support staff. Stop wasting money on showy titles, poorly performing administrators with high salaries, lots of people in advancement who get paid well and reimbursed for every dime they spend while not bringing in any money, and look at the real waste here. It isn't the people who are paid the lowest amounts or who work overtime without any overtime pay, or who work over the summer without pay - these are the people that keep things running with very little support. Spend money on staff development and teaching managers how to do a better job or even a tolerable one since most are ineffective at best. Do better at truly appreciating those that make the college work well - not just saying "how much we appreciate you..." but really doing something to that will have a positive impact for everyone.

I worked at Gustavus Adolphus College part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Ability to quickly and conveniently get shifts covered

    Cons

Supervisors are usually students that don't care to be there and break every assigned rule for convenience. I also saw the head of the department in the actual Cafe only once

    Advice to Management

Wander into the cafe every once in a while. Trust me, you'll catch something fast.
