I have been working at Häfele (More than a year)

    Pros

They sell great products and have been in business for 40 years. They are very well known in the industry. They have strong financial backing.

    Cons

Extremely bad management make the pros listed above intangible for the employee. CEO comes from the uniform rental business, has the charisma of potato, and represents perfectly the concept of the empty suit. He has produced 2 rounds of layoffs so far in 2015 while the competition is bursting at the seams with sales growth. All of the individuals that made the company a success are gone, but a few and has a result the internal functions are running every which way but right. Hence, the growing loss of sales and profit. Many holes in the product offering, and stock outages of product in high demand. Management is desperate and does not know how to manage pricing and use a shot gun price increase approach. Again, more profitable products are out of stock or simply not even offered. More layoffs will be coming as this is their only strategy to deal with the loss of sales and profit. Terrible customer service which starts and ends at the top as it is a depressing atmosphere with extreme negligence in every possible aspect.

    Advice to Management

I could go on and on with the cons. Management needs to be gutted and strengthened. Laid off employees need to be brought back. This company needs creativity, competence, and confidence which will hurt the bottom line in the short run but this is the cost of long run success. Didn't have to be that way but "it is what it is" as our CEO likes to say.

    Pros

Great people. Good training programs focused on making the employees more competent at their core jobs. Quality products and an efficient distribution system.

    Cons

Senior management has their head in the sand, and does not see what is going on in the market. Way too dependent upon their IT systems to dictate how they interact with their customers. Not customer focused. Culture of fear for your job.

    Advice to Management

Replace top management with effective leadership and forward-thinking managers that are customer focused. Look at new ways to do business instead of looking at how you've always done things. Reward people for thinking outside the Hafele box.

    Pros

Overall great experience with this organization. If you factor PTO, and insurance options, the benefit package is better than most. Sales bonus structure was complicated, but seamed to be fair.

    Cons

Complicated bonus structure. Communication was slow sometimes from the office to the sales remote sales staff - causing delays to the customer.

    Advice to Management

I think the Management needs to have a better understanding of the customer. They should "get out in the trenches" once a month. this would allow them to see the strengths/weaknesses of the organization, and how they align with the companies goals.

I have been working at Häfele full-time

    Pros

Hafele is well known and respected in the industry for quality products and service. Dealing with clientele is a pleasure. Company is patient and loyal to employees. Compensation package is fair to generous. Managers are competent, even talented, and decent human beings.

    Cons

There are gaps in communication within the company. Performance reviews come only occasionally. Goals and expectations are not made clear. Also communication from the company to customers/prospects needs improvement.

    Advice to Management

Make an effort to eliminate information silos. A defined structure of reports to management, and feedback from management will help make goals clear. Expand marketing to include information about changes, challenges and improvements within Hafele and its products.

I worked at Häfele full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Liberal Vacation policy. Few lay-offs during economy slow-down. High number of long-time employees who are highly experienced. Global player in their industry. Matching 401K.

    Cons

Very outdated management style - threats and intimidation are the norm and moral is low in the workforce. Company is owned/managed by a German family and favoritism toward some employees is common and glaring. Employees stay because there are few jobs in the area. Almost no opportunities for advancement unless you know the right person. No annual cost of living or pay increases. (They don't tell you that when you are hired.)

    Advice to Management

Bring in consultants and practice modern management. Learn to treat employees with dignity and respect. Improve training programs to reflect employee experience. Listen to your employees and visit your customers.(Not just the ones you know.) Restructure employee compensation - if you don;t know how hire a consultant. Encourage your managers to work together and not be "Yes men" because they are afraid to speak-out.
