    I worked at H E B as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Easiest work on earth, does not take long to learn the system, no prior work experience needed. If the store is not busy then the workplace environment is laid back.

    Cons

Working as a bagger at H E B is the easiest work around which can make work dull and boring. The bagger position is at the bottom of the hierarchy in H E B's employment force.

    Advice to Management

Continue to be encouraging toward staff. Jump in the grocer line to help with customers if traffic is causing line congestion.

    I worked at H E B part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good hourly pay. If you love meeting and talking to people then you'll enjoy working. They work with your schedule.

    Cons

Some of the asm's think they own the store and you are pretty much stuck with them if you work in the front end.
Cashiers/Baggers have to pick up trash, sweep, clean etc. Why do they have maintenance? Just for restrooms?

    Advice to Management

Choose people in charge wisely. I think employees should feel comfortable working and therefore HEB does NOT need certain PEOPLE who will NOT treat employees with respect.

    Pros

HEB is a growing company with many friendly staff and people of all backgrounds engaged in diligent efforts. The products make it a good store, the down-home atmosphere makes it a hospitable environment.

    Cons

Do not connect to HEB on facebook. It is only used to fuel managerial gossip and provides no networking benefit to you.

    Advice to Management

Be more compassionate talking to people who buy less when they have complaints. When you give customers lemons they are not going to make lemonade. They are going to complain about the quality of the lemons.

    Cons

It's hard getting adjusted to the sleep patterns when working overnight

    I have been working at H E B full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The culture at HEB in the past was really inspirational and phenomenal. In recent years that has changed in my opinion. The people for the most part are good people. The company really does care about the service and experience that they provide to their customers. The benefits are good.

    Cons

HEB is terrible at promoting people from within. It is so frustrating when long term partners complete their education or degrees and are not promoted or considered for positions. Additionally because of the size of the company and the high number of departments, whoever is the Director of that department can and does have way too much power in choosing the fate of their subordinates. Hiring practices in particular departments are questionable. Individuals are encouraged or asked to apply for positions that haven't even been posted yet, and that person will get the position because the Director of the department likes them for whatever reason. That is not fair. Partners should be evaluated or considered for a position based on their work not on their relationship with the manager. The politics happening in some areas is absolutely destroying the reputation and culture HEB tried so hard to portray to outsiders. Partners are asked to perform outside of their job description and therefore are not compensated correctly. That is not fair.

    Advice to Management

Rules and standards need to be upheld across the board. Certain leadership should not be able to get away with doing what ever they want. That is so detrimental to morale and to the company as a whole. You are losing great partners every single day because you will not consider them for growth and development opportunities. Also get with the times! Virtual or online meeting is not a bad thing. Allow people to be who they are without judgment. Let go of the stuffy, straight laced business culture of the past and you will see much more creativity and productivity from your people. You lose great people on the corporate side because of old so called business etiquette that no one really cares about.

    I have been working at H E B part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

They are super flexible with your hours, friendly partners, great pay, fun environment. HEB is very involved with the community and they are always holding fundraisers, runs, and even things like a softball tournament with your fellow partners. The staff is wonderful, you get 10% discount on name brand items.

    Cons

Sometimes the usual rude customers, and management but those are to be expected! Nothing other then that though.

    Advice to Management

Upper management needs to keep an eye on some of their employees that are slacking.
