I worked at HCR ManorCare (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Variety of work, independence, pay was "ok" but a lot was expected of you for that. Solid support system within HR.

    Cons

Long hours, weekend availability. Lots of off hours calls for investigations, high expectations for mediocre pay. Off hours (early mornings/late nights) meetings were expected to accommodate all shifts.

I worked at HCR ManorCare full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

the Administrator who hired me, and a handful of other employees, almost all of whom have left the company; some left without other jobs - they were too overworked to have time to job hunt but couldn't tolerate working there because of corporate

    Cons

so many cons which all stemmed from the corporate office: insufficient and haphazard training; excessive workload; cumbersome processes; inadequate resources; usually not helpful when needed but extreme micromanagement; harsh management style; no appreciation; decades old business model

    Advice to Management

Develop an updated business model and positive management style. Decrease the number of regional and corporate employees and increase the number of employees in the facilities.

For the Human Resources Director position, give it a different job title so that prospective employees understand that it's actually a Recruiter/HR Assistant position. Someone who has functioned as an actual HR Director or Manager will probably find this position to offer little variety, have a great amount of record keeping and busywork, and provide almost no autonomy.

    Pros

Very employee friendly. HCR ManorCare has a number of policies and procedures in place that support a pro-employee environment.
Financially stable in a challenging healthcare environment.
Has high expectations for supervisors and managers to provide quality care in a caring environment.
Has an excellent track record of promoting from within - numerous examples of nurse aides continuing their education and being developed for nursing and nurse management careers.

    Cons

This is related more to the industry in general vs. the company - healthcare in general continues to be a more and more challenging environment.

I worked at HCR ManorCare full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

This company is a leader in the field of long term and rehab services. The company provides steady employment if you don't mind earning less than going rate for a position and working endless and thankless hour.

    Cons

This company does not show any appreciation for it's HR Directors. Management has no concept of the workload and keeps piling on work and will not hire anyone to support the HR function. They expect perfection yet there are only so many hours in the day to get the work completed, The job is very stressful and positive solutions and constructive ideas fall on deaf ears. Upper management use bullying to motivate employees.

    Advice to Management

Get realistic as to how much an employee can accomplish and be more appreciative. The company has to stop at some point sacrificing people for profits.

    Pros

Facilities are clean and attractive. Many employees take pride in working for a leader in skilled nursing. I worked with many caring and intelligent people.

    Cons

Benefits and compensation were not very good. Stressful work environment. Nursing staff gets burnt out and move on to hospital settings after they receive training.

    Advice to Management

Spend more time training support staff. I understand nursing is important, but it still takes everyone in an organization to run a successful business.

I have been working at HCR ManorCare full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Excellent training, and every policy or procedure you would need is already done for you. Amazing corporate safety program, and Circle of Care for staff appreciation. Corporate staff are just a phone call away, and once you know who to talk to, everyone is glad to help when they are needed. You also have hundreds of peers nationwide, and they are also happy to help and share ideas.

    Cons

Pay was SO below market that is wasn't even competitive. When I left to work for a competitor, I got a 20% pay increase. ManorCare also is notorious about working employees to death, especially exempt staff. It was assumed that all managers would learn how to handle an admission, and that we would all work a weekend day each month. HR was also not eligible for the bonus plan (only Administrators, Marketing, and BOM) which I though wasn't right. Some Administrators were tyrants and treated the line staff like servants.

    Advice to Management

HR needs to be added to bonus plan! If the company would pay better, the turnover wouldn't be so high!
