Sometimes the workload can be heavy but you must know how to manage it.

I have been working at HDR full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Flexible work schedule. Unlimited coffee.

    Cons

Infrastructure company with typical low salaries and poor management. Mediocre benefits package, laughable 401k, and wasteful spending.

Hurricane Irma put many Florida workers out of work for a few days. Instead of showing compassion for the <200 employees we were told to take PTO, go negative on PTO, or take unpaid leave. A company this size (10,000 employees) should be able to spare a few days of PTO for 200 employees. Instead, they choose to punish those who saved PTO for vacation while asking for PTO donations from other offices. Either way, HDR will get their money. They don't care about you.

    Advice to Management

Show more compassion to your employees.

I have been working at HDR full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Environmental friendly, extremely nice co-workers, great company history and culture

    Cons

Payment is limited; due to the size of this international office, there's a lot of remote work and online calls which would cause some miss communication

I worked at HDR full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great benefits. Lots of good equipment. Field staff largely excellent. Pay was decent but nothing special. Office has plenty of parking.

    Cons

Management is aloof. HDR is big and has gobbled up so many small firms that corporate culture just doesn't get the reality of field-based research and work.

HR is gossip central so watch out.

OT rules are vindictive and probably illegal. Worked 70 hours in one week but 1 hour was billed to overhead? Enjoy your 40 hours of pay. Work 70 and bill none to overhead? Get 70 hours of pay!

Management (local) asked us to lie on our time sheets, I assume in order to keep the corporate hawks in Omaha away.

    Advice to Management

Stop driving away (or stop laying off) the people that put food on your table. HDR is so top-heavy that upper level management has no idea about the realities of day-to-day work. Talk to your employees and help them help you.

I have been working at HDR full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great people, great benefits, flexible schedule based upon workload and task completion.

    Cons

Lack of upward mobility. Relatively low salary compared to the national average.

    Advice to Management

Find the bad apples at the project management level and either remove them or laterally place them allowing for new ideas and younger engineers/employees to be challenged further.
