Reviews about "employee owned"
Return to all Reviews- Current Employee, more than 1 year★★★★★
Pros
Lots of opportunities to learn and management seems to take an interest in growth. Post-pandemic, HDR has focused and doubled down on employee development. There are a diverse range of projects to get involved with. Great culture and 100% employee owned which is a wonderful thing. Retirement plan is good with reasonably low fees. The company stock has historically performed very well and has made many long-timers quite wealthy.
Cons
Lots of cool-aid drinking with the company stock... Don't get caught up and invest too much. Remember the S&P averages 12% or so as well. Diversify! A good chunk of the 401k match is in company stock.

Pros
- Employee owned: You can purchase company stock for your 401k. Stock price has appreciated substantially year after year. - Collegial culture: People are caring, helpful and collaborative - Expert driven: Great place if you have a set of highly specialized advisory skills (from social scientist to six sigma black belt nurses, to computational geeks to environmental communication experts) that can elevate the engineering and architectural practices . Sometimes, if you bring unique credentials, the firm may even go to the extent of creating a new position just for you. You are expected to find your way and prove your value for projects by forging internal alliances.
Cons
- Strongly focused on yearly stock appreciation -- While it can't be argued that the firm is run in an admirable way financially speaking, leadership will cut costs (and headcount) swiftly when the numbers are trending down. You will ultimately be judged by your billable utilization -- even if you have delivered extraordinary value in other ways (e.g. internal initiatives, etc) - Uncertain career path if you are not an engineer or an architect. It's pretty much up to you to figure it out. That said, the firm allows for opportunities to move internally (e.g. between architecture and engineering)

Pros
- Good company with a long history of great projects and achievements. - Great minds all over the company so you feel inspired to achieve great things too. - Flexibility of work hours and location for some positions. - Nice pay with good benefits. - Employee-owned policy means everybody gets to own company shares on their 401(k)s as part of the benefits package.
Cons
- The company has offices all over the country, so middle management differs a lot in style (and ego) depending on location.
- Current Employee, more than 1 year★★★★★
