I worked at HGA Architects & Engineers full-time

    Pros

Many great opportunities in a large architecture and engineering firm.

    Cons

At a large office, there is a higher possibility to get siloed.

    Pros

Awesome company that cares a lot about it's employees. Friendly people that get together very well. Would recommend for anyone.

    Cons

Senior staff are super busy. Makes it hard for interns to get the chance to learn from them directly. Onboarding is boring and doesn't do much.

    Advice to Management

Have interns work closer with senior employees for the first couple weeks to get a feel for the job.

    Pros

A flexible, nimble, collaborative and entrepreneurial environment that really empowers its leaders and promotes quality design. The group is strong in its client-focused sectors of choice and boasts a true integrated team approach (architects, interiors, engineers,...all under one roof) for most of its offices. Highly leverages lean design, research, sustainability and progressive design process approaches to innovate for the times (and stay on the edge). The place is professional, yet very personable (and fun) all at the same time. Quality design is important to everyone.

    Cons

Growing and each office is at a different place in its journey (so to speak), so there is some inconsistencies. Smaller offices in California need more name recognition/PR in local markets. Still learning to balance forces of our new post-recession market (how much to spend on research? how much on innovation? how to balance with needed utilization? So on.....).

    Advice to Management

Stay the new coarse; it feels great and is yielding the right results. Keep up the entrepreneurial spirit, but not at the expense of collaboration..... and keep training and empowering that next generation.

I have been working at HGA Architects & Engineers full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Aside from the great opportunity to do design work and the wonderful people who work here, I really appreciate HGA for how well they support their employee's education, personal and professional development, and overall health.

    Cons

Unless you live in the mid-west, there is very little name-recognition with HGA, especially in California. This may not be important to you, but it is something the office struggles with a little bit. As the offices in California (there are four) develop more, however, the name recognition is growing.

    Advice to Management

Get the HGA name out to the community more by reaching out to architectural students, volunteer organizations, and community groups.

I have been working at HGA Architects & Engineers full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Management wants to help make your work experience a good one. I have a wonderful and empathetic boss. Smart, fun colleagues.

    Cons

Dated working environment, poor interior design library. BIM support could use more employees. Unrealistic utilization. Pay could be better for expectations of employees.

    Advice to Management

Millennials aren't something that you need to prepare for. They already work for you.

I have been working at HGA Architects & Engineers (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Work-life balance is the best of any Architecture firm at which I've worked. Good location in downtown nearby walkable restaurants, stores, apartments and condos.

    Cons

Lots of homeless people on nearby sidewalks and the park.

    Advice to Management

Continue focusing on thought leadership while added more focus on continual improvement of internal processes. Utilization rates are way too high causing too little focus on internal improvement.
