I worked at HGST full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    Co-workers (engineers especially) were helpful.
    Pleasant yet energetic work environment.
    Never a dull day.
    Always learning something new.

    Cons

Too many projects cancelled without reason.
    Too many layoffs.
Management at times seems to lack commitment to critical projects.

    Advice to Management

You need to re-evaluate your position in the marketplace and provide products that will address customer needs. More R&D is necessary for the SSD market.

I worked at HGST full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The best thing with HGST in San Jose is the people. They are hard-working, technical, data driven and mostly friendly. Majority of the employees are long timers and former IBMers which I think is a good characteristic. The management is generally influenced by the IBM culture and they are for the most part technical, respectful and caring. The 1st to 4th level managers of mine were easy to reach and were among the best people I have ever reported to.

    Cons

The HDD technology is outdated and it is unclear how long manufacturing can run a profitable business in San Jose. It is therefore a high pressure environment and demands intense engagement which can turn out exhausting after a while. The machines are also very old which creates much friction in manufacturing. The career growth opportunities are few and somewhat limited. The HGST/WD medical benefits must be among the worse in the bay area. Vacation times have to be negotiated with the manager which may not be such a bad thing.

I worked at HGST full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Stable, generally steady work environment (for better or worse). Industry standard benefits package.

    Cons

Limited growth potential, low pay relative to industry

    Advice to Management

Employee growth and development was largely overlooked, at least in my area. I would have loved to stay on if management had worked with me on career development and worked with me to create a path to mutually agreed upon career goals.

    Pros

Good team, people are passionate and friendly. Manager of my group is really nice and easy to talk to, always gives positive feedback. Salary and benefits for interns are very good. I love the gym located nearby, you can go there anytime when you're tired.

    Cons

In the transition period, they have laid off a large amount of people

I have been working at HGST full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Company works hard to make employees feel valued. It is a good place to work with friendly co-workers and knowledgeable teams.

    Cons

The recent merger with Western Digital and Sandisk has created large amounts of indecision. Until it is all figured out direction is limited and ever changing.

    Advice to Management

Set a direction and move on. Two plus years to converge is painful and reduces productivity as the unknown causes far more problems than the wrong decision.
