    Pros

Great group of people on a coworker level

    Cons

Management is constantly pushing for updates. Taking time away from actual work

    Advice to Management

Focus less on updates to be able to bring to your meetings and more about accommodating your workers to get the work done

    I worked at HGST full-time

    Pros

Our team was awesome, fun, and we worked like we were trying to bring something great to the channel

    Cons

Sales team wasn't given the resources or support we needed. Numbers to hit minimum commission were sometimes 40% growth over previous year

    Advice to Management

In this order: Keep your customers happy, keep your channel happy, keep your sales team happy...the rest will mostly take care of itself. As soon as you put stockholders at the top of the list, you lose everything else, quality, innovation, and status, and become a machine.

    Pros

    Vertical integration
    Manufacturer
    Western Digital as the parent

    Cons

No clue how to run enterprise sales
No idea how to motivate a sales team ($$)

    Advice to Management

Sales execs and engineers work harder if you pay them for their successes. Help them be successful and everyone will benefit.

    Pros

    Total comp package above market
( they HAVE to pay more for all that you have to put up with!)

    Cons

    Reorgs regularly
De-commits on products with way too much frequency
Culture of nepotism and hiring your buddies
    Lack of career advancement
    Layoffs always follow acquisitions

    Advice to Management

Review the culture inside WDC... Richard Branson said: take care of your employees. And they will take care of your customers.

I have been working at HGST full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Big company with decent earnings off their devices business.

    Cons

Way too focused on one person making all the decisions in a vacuum. Comp plans that do not match the industry. HR and payroll incompetence is consistent - pay has been messed up several times for the whole organization. Unrealistic goals and expectations for systems and new business outside of hard drives and core. Culture is focused around managing up to the leader vs. focusing on getting to results and utilizing smart hires skills. Too many layers of management to protect the incompetent. No real marketing strategy compared to peers in the enterprise space. really disappointing that a few highly placed business leaders continue to make mistake after mistake and blame it on everyone else.

    Advice to Management

Too little decision making past the EVP layer. If you aren't a yes person, you aren't in the clique. Hire good people and trust them to make decisions that make sense. Too many people are in their roles because they are friends with the EVP, not because they are competent at their jobs. Morale is trending downwards as good people leave and many of us can't stay much longer.

    Pros

It was an awesome team and collaborative environment. I worked for some great managers in the logistics and supply chain. Free lunch on Thursday and Crossfit!

    Cons

I was laid off when the WD merger was finalized. It took 3 years so I was prepared. I was able to plan some time off. Which has been wonderful!

    Advice to Management

I really don't have any advice to give management. I enjoyed my time there and I learned a lot about logistics and supply chain.

I worked at HGST full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good database system and organized operations. Reasonable working hours except deprivation of your weekends.

    Cons

Too much politics and interpersonal relationship conflicts. You must take a side to stick to it or any company's turnarounds or reorganizations will put you in jeopardy. You could be sacrificed. They don't count on your technical abilities but only your political side.

    Advice to Management

Focus on technology instead of politics. This is a technology-driven company, not a state or federal agency. What the company needs to deliver are cutting-edge technologies and competitive products, not feeding those who only can use their mouths.
