I have been working at HGST as a contractor (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Huge company and has a very good growth potential.

    Cons

Not a good IT environment. It's not lively and they don't care about contractors even though they work equally or better than full time employees.

    Advice to Management

Please treat everybody equally. Contractors do same or better work than full time employees.

I worked at HGST full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Stable, generally steady work environment (for better or worse). Industry standard benefits package.

    Cons

Limited growth potential, low pay relative to industry

    Advice to Management

Employee growth and development was largely overlooked, at least in my area. I would have loved to stay on if management had worked with me on career development and worked with me to create a path to mutually agreed upon career goals.

I worked at HGST (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The very best people, especially their technical prowess. Good pay, reasonable benefits.
A great company with world-class Operations, Manufacturing, and product Quality values.

    Cons

Too many acquisitions that did not pan out as planned, and too much ongoing consolidation activity impacting the business and morale. With little true new product innovation, especially with majority of customers going all-flash storage, they missed this opportunity by several years and it feels like a slow death now - too little, too late.

    Advice to Management

Innovation in this industry is the key. Accounting tricks, acquisitions, and cost cutting alone won't save this business, it has to innovate new products that customers desire and be leaders, not follow others with outdated business models and thinking.

I worked at HGST as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Work load is very easy. You get paid for full time, but really only have to work about 30 hours. Most people show up for work by 9:30 and leave by 5:00. If you are looking for a place to kick back, this is the company for you. Sites have Crossfit and a health club which are free to all employees.

    Cons

The company is extremely old school and is trying very hard to be current. Many employees have been with the company 30+ years and have very lucrative compensation packages; due to being lifers. To invigorate the company they need to weed out lifers and bring in fresh, new blood. Merger with HGST, WD, and Sandisk increase the complexity of getting things done.

    Advice to Management

Bring on some of the fresh minds from Pure and DDN.
