I worked at HGST full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

It was an awesome team and collaborative environment. I worked for some great managers in the logistics and supply chain. Free lunch on Thursday and Crossfit!

    Cons

I was laid off when the WD merger was finalized. It took 3 years so I was prepared. I was able to plan some time off. Which has been wonderful!

    Advice to Management

I really don't have any advice to give management. I enjoyed my time there and I learned a lot about logistics and supply chain.

I worked at HGST full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Mostly smart and dedicated people working there. Did not work us to the bone.

    Cons

Not the most creative environment, and not a strong commitment to diversity. Slow to change on structural or engineering stack issues that held back team productivity. Very little mobility allowed internally--I felt stuck in my position since I was good at it and the company just wanted me to keep cranking away.

I worked at HGST full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good database system and organized operations. Reasonable working hours except deprivation of your weekends.

    Cons

Too much politics and interpersonal relationship conflicts. You must take a side to stick to it or any company's turnarounds or reorganizations will put you in jeopardy. You could be sacrificed. They don't count on your technical abilities but only your political side.

    Advice to Management

Focus on technology instead of politics. This is a technology-driven company, not a state or federal agency. What the company needs to deliver are cutting-edge technologies and competitive products, not feeding those who only can use their mouths.

I worked at HGST full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

-Salary is good if negotiated well at the time of offer
    - Typically salary is adjusted every year.
    - Bonus can be 200% of target if the company does well

    Cons

    - Very old waterfall culture
    - You wont feel like you fit in any other fast paced web companies if you were to interview outside.
    - Highly political!

I have been working at HGST full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Free coffee/tea
    Roth contribution to 401(k)
    Decent salary

    Cons

While WD acquired HGST, the top management is mostly HGST, while middle is WD. This leads to a schizophrenic culture across the company.
Sandisk appears to be an entity onto themselves.
After merger, technical path was effectively demoted one step, or equivalently, management path was promoted one level.
    Poor/non-existent technical managers.
Workforce reductions about every six months.
Director and below must share office.
Rats in my office (as in the four legged furry kind).

    Advice to Management

We are not Google, stop implementing policy changes by justifying 'this is what Google does', particularly when it's not true ('unlimited vacation policy').
HDD is the cash cow you'll need to implement what you want for the future, perhaps stop referring to it as 'spinning rust'?
For the next round of workforce reduction, perhaps target the vast middle management.
Encourage open and honest technical discussions instead of current culture of not criticizing clearly incorrect science.
Technical reviews should be more than a dog and pony show. Where are the probing and critical questions from management? Or, more generally, where is vast middle management on a daily basis? Really, what are they doing?
