Micromanagement and poor upper management make it a tough place to work. Lack of communication about future plans. Always doing rework.

    Advice to Management

Hire the right people for the job.

I worked at HMSA full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    - You will definitely learn new skills (however you may or may not find those skills beneficial in future
    - With constant changes in leadership there is opportunity to improve corporate culture

    Cons

    - Inability for leadership to make decisions
    - Projects often take longer than necessary due to "analysis paralysis"
    - Passive aggressive culture (issues are brought to managers or behind employee's backs as opposed to addressing directly with the individual)
    - Limited to career growth
    - Salaries below industry standard
    - Corporate culture is ruled by fear of disruption. Disruptors or change agents are quickly ushered out due to resistance to change.
    - Currently under a overhaul of corporate culture and many employees are fearful of losing their jobs.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees and make corporate culture a priority to improve morale.

I worked at HMSA full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Most of my co-worker are alright, but a few needs more training.

    Cons

Mid to Upper Management are not very good at what they should be doing. Most don't know what and how to manage the worker under their control.

    Advice to Management

Really need to get the ducks into line in every department. And get a better computer software system! The current software really blows big time.

I have been working at HMSA full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Benefits are good.
    Location close to shopping areas.

    Cons

The whole company. Listen to what is being said in all these reviews because it's all true. We have the blind leading the blind leading the blind and when I say we have idiots in management I'm talking management that lacks basic common sense and Basic experience. Ask them what 1+1 is and you'll get 25. And don't get me started on open door policy, no fear of retribution, etc. it is all a lie. If you open your mouth everything will be held against you from every level of management. I have so much stuff in files off illegal things that have taken place, just waiting to use it. They say they care about the employees but they don't. If you don't mind working very hard and getting a 1% annual raise this is the place for you. And your coworker who doesn't work hard will get the same if not more .

    Advice to Management

Find another place to work. You're incompetent and you hire incompetent.

    Pros

There are still good people there, but the best ones keep leaving because they can't take sitting on their butts until retirement.

    Cons

Nothing ever changes. Management cannot make decisions unless there is complete consensus, which is never going to happen with intelligent people seeing benefits in different directions.

    Advice to Management

Start making some decisions, even if they turn out to be wrong - at least things will keep moving!

    Pros

enjoy the contact with Managers, Leadership team, Stakeholders, vendors, etc.

    Cons

    As a contractor, no status

    Advice to Management

either embrace Contractor as part as your workforce or don't hire them- stop treating them like second class citizens that can't go to the GYM at lunch!!!

I have been working at HMSA full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Standard benefit package (401k, paid vacation...)
Friendly co-workers and fairly casual clothing
Remodeled main office building in Honolulu

    Cons

Executive leadership doesn't walk the walk - company values include open and honest, it cannot be further from the truth. A few have tried to change things but left discouraged or were encouraged to leave.
Buried under a rigid and obsolete management style and driven by a blurry / canned vision, operations suffer from a lack of alignment and ability to execute.
Rarely people are rewarded on facts / data / accountability. You will see people at key position not going anywhere in spite of their incompetence because they belong to the good old boys club.
I could go on and on but you get the idea... on the surface it looks OK but as soon as you'll try to accomplish something meaningful, you'll realize it's a cluster.

    Advice to Management

Like another review said.... won't matter, they're full of themselves.

    Pros

I really enjoyed working with the people there - everyone was really nice and the environment was very friendly and happy.

    Cons

As an intern, sometimes I didn't feel that I was truly contributing to the company. I was assigned busywork occasionally.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you're doing - the work environment is great, everyone seems happy and friendly and there are great facilities.
