  • As a new graduate engineer it's a great place to learn (in 7 reviews)

    Pros

Mid-size company made working there feel like working with close friends and family, allowing us to develop very good relationships with colleagues and peers.

    Cons

Furniture industry is very volatile in the fact that it will be the first to feel the the downsides of a bad economy, and the first thing management will do is to arbitrarily cut head-count from all departments, regardless if you have been a good performer or not.

    Advice to Management

Take a salary cut from $250,000 to $75000 before you start letting lower level people go.

    Pros

    Great people to work with
    good company direction and management
the laid back managers work on the floor for personal assistance

    Cons

    Fast paced, stressful at times
I got trained in many areas over a short period of time, then had high expectations
    monotonous work over time
    long days, early hours

    Advice to Management

I suggest training the employees slower, until mastery of a certain area, then continue to broaden as time goes on

    Pros

While working in the IT Department I had great gratification that I was able to help other people with their everyday problems. The production personal and office personal were great to work with.

    Cons

Very stressful at times but that was all part of the job. I believe some people were probably paid more then they were worth, based on job performance.

    Advice to Management

I have no complaints what so ever about my boss or supervisor. They were both great to work with and very good at listening and giving tips/advice on the job.

    Pros

Great company culture, great pay, White Collar People are amazing, Blue Collar is pretty decent as well. NO UNIONs!!!

    Cons

It's in Muscatine, Iowa. Sometimes you have to work from 4am - 5pm if you have to see both 1st and 2nd shift.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work!

I worked at HNI full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great people from the top down. Member culture is tied together with company profit sharing and overall good company benefits. Split and Focus business units are keenly focused on their target customers and marketplace, product development, and organizational structures are aligned to perform well. Company is a force in the mid market.

    Cons

Split and focus business structure is highly challenged to move up market to larger, national and global customers. Faced with internal politics, compensation, and organizational structure issues to bring together all companies to pursue larger accounts.

    Advice to Management

Continue to develop members and offer growth and development opportunities

I worked at HNI as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Give you lots of work and responsibility as an intern.
The culture of the company is great.
The leadership is helpful and the lunch n learns from MCR (HR) is good.
Lots of things for interns to do.

    Cons

Location. But close to Iowa City and Quad cities so it is not that bad.
Sometimes miscommunication in management so as an intern I had nothing to do.

    Pros

HNI is a place where people who are motivated and go-getters can rise and advance their career. There are long hours and some after hour work, but realistically, this is now the norm in IT. If you want a place where you work from 9-5 and that's it, HNI isn't the place for you.
Great opportunity for those who see and invest in HNI's future.
The people who cant adapt to the new reality of IT are the ones who struggle in my opinion. You can't just sit back and do the bare minimum all day and think you'll continue skating by.

    Cons

A lot of long hours and the job can be stressful when timelines drive work. Communication is a problem, some people are left out when not deeply involved. But, this is a problem in just about any fast-paced culture that I've been involved in.

    Advice to Management

Keep the communication channels open and over communicate. Don't just assume everyone knows what is going on.

    Pros

Flexibility, good people to work with, chances to move up in positions. Good benefits for yourself and family. Learn many things.

    Cons

Lack of communication at times between management and employees. Sometimes work consumes a lot of your time; especially during the busy peak.
