I have been working at HNI full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good benefits and salary and opportunity to move around the company.

    Cons

People will step on you on their way to the top; take credit for your work. You can get far if you are willing to suck up and work a ton of over time. It is a "good ol' boys club". Way to many chiefs. New grads get treated better than long time employees.

    Pros

Enjoyed the interesting and challenging work responsibilities.

    Cons

Senior level management, although intelligent and amiable, not engaged with those who contribute to their success.

    Advice to Management

Listen, respect, understand and be unbiased.

    Pros

Pretty good people to work with. Was a good place to work 10 years ago

    Cons

Management needs to step it up. Many projects are started and never finished or rushed and end up inadequate. They will hire anyone, half the new employees cant speak English which makes training and communicating difficult. Limited advancement without a degree.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the floor members more, just because we don't have a fancy degree doesn't mean our ideas for improvement are bad. Follow through with RCI events to make sure they actually work and accomplish the goal.

    Pros

HNI is a place where people who are motivated and go-getters can rise and advance their career. There are long hours and some after hour work, but realistically, this is now the norm in IT. If you want a place where you work from 9-5 and that's it, HNI isn't the place for you.
Great opportunity for those who see and invest in HNI's future.
The people who cant adapt to the new reality of IT are the ones who struggle in my opinion. You can't just sit back and do the bare minimum all day and think you'll continue skating by.

    Cons

A lot of long hours and the job can be stressful when timelines drive work. Communication is a problem, some people are left out when not deeply involved. But, this is a problem in just about any fast-paced culture that I've been involved in.

    Advice to Management

Keep the communication channels open and over communicate. Don't just assume everyone knows what is going on.

I have been working at HNI full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Many Dedicated people who care about their work

    Cons

Management Will find ways to fire those they don't like by "downsizing". Manage by berating people. "Emperor's New Clothes" syndrome - upper mgt tells you what you should believe. No work-life balance. You work long hours in order just to stay off the radar. unfortunately I am tied to the area so options are limited, but this is not the place you want to be.

    Advice to Management

Way out of touch with your employees. No one trusts skip level meetings - we are not going to voice real concerns in large groups where others can go back to tell your manager that you had complaints. Shareholders need to take a stand and recognize the company is flailing under current management. A buy out would be a blessing.

    Pros

The people are awesome. Generally hardworking workforce. Exciting to work for everyday. Moving forward

    Cons

Slow transformations. Old systems. Some old way of thinking. All I can think of now.

    Advice to Management

Keep pushing for young talent. That's what is helping drive big time initiatives that you are putting in place. The people make this company great.

    Pros

Difficult to get fired even if you are incompetent.

    Cons

You will be mired down in endless meetings where a decision is never made only to have the CIO blindly throw money at companies that almost guarantee failure through their inability to execute.

    Advice to Management

Stop throwing all the money at outside contractors who don't have a vested interest in the corporation. Their only interest is extracting more money. It's like despair.com says, "If you're not a part of the solution, there is good money to be made in prolonging the problem."

    Cons

Still holdouts to the old ways of furniture manufacturing, corporation very large, too much SG&A expenses.

    Advice to Management

Trim the dead weight in upper management that is not adding value to the products.
