    Pros

The people who work at HNTB are, for the most part, really bright, full of energy, and interested in having fun at work. This is the most fun place I've ever worked. People are genuinely friendly to one another and interested in helping one another. For the most part, management is committed to helping employees succeed.
The company supports monthly fun events for employees.

    Cons

There is some competition or lack of cooperation between different divisions. Management is resistant to change. Focus on metrics and short-term performance that skews decision-making.
Some decisions are penny wise but pound foolish, may save costs this quarter but will be much more costly in the long run.

    Advice to Management

Be open to change. Be willing to take suggestions from employees who haven't spent their entire careers at HNTB. A little diversity of experience and approach could do wonders for the bottom line.

    Pros

One of the best reasons to work for HNTB is the compensation and benefits package. Both are very competitive and often exceed competitors. The employee stock ownership program is also another great reason. Monetary reasons aside, the company is very focused on letting you decide where and how far you want to take your career. Workload is heavy throughout the entire company, and the chance to work on a wide variety of some interesting, some not so interesting, projects exists.

    Cons

Work/life balance is often a negative attribute. Its either feast or famine, sometimes, working 70 hour weeks is not enough, while at other times, it is a struggle to get 40 in. Changes in upper management has brought in some new faces, and I am still undecided if the company made wise decisions in the promotion and hiring process.

    Advice to Management

It is great that the company has big aspirations for growth, just remember this: Imagine you are pouring water into a 2-liter bottle. As the water gets towards the top of the bottle, you need to quit pouring in water, and "squeeze" it off at the top. If you dont "squeeze" it off at the top, the water will spill over and then you have a mess. The moral of the story? As we grow, be sure to know when to stop.

    Pros

They fund education and it is available to all employees.
They pay for professional certification testing and renewals.
    Fast paced and challenging environment.
The company works on some very impressive projects in multiple sectors.
They make it easy to keep informed on business wide activities.
Constantly expanding technology and keeping ahead of the competition.
They keep abreast and use some of the newest and best technology available.
    Great Dental and Eyecare Plans
Profit Sharing and 401k plan match
    Tools for professional advancement provided.

    Cons

If you're an 8-5'er and just want to put in your 8 and go home, you will not excel here. Dedication is rewarded but that generally means digging in and getting it done when needed.
    Medical Benefits could use work

    Advice to Management

Listen to your direct reports. Act to keep you best and brightest before laying them off and rehiring them. That's unsettling.
Be more guarded with quality talent on project sites and don't let project partners steal your talent. Reward proven results equally without bias to degree, pedigree or experience.

    Pros

The reason I stay at HNTB is because I get to work with great people and work on exciting projects. Also, unlike most engineering firms that operate on a salary-only basis, HNTB actually pays you overtime when you work more than your 40 hours in a week. This i really feel gives you a tangible incentive to work even harder than you would otherwise.

    Cons

One of the issues I have always had with HNTB is the fact they have rather uncentralized leadership. I technically work in the headquarters location but much of the management is spread throughout the county at various offices. I really think HNTB would benefit from locating all of its management to the current headquarters location to create a stronger centralized cultture.

    Advice to Management

Work on improving employee satisfication. Many people today seek out a company not so much for the pay or benefits or the vision, but rather the friendships that can be formed at a workplace.

    Pros

People who give HNTB poor marks have obviously never worked in this industry. HNTB is by far the best employer when it comes to design firms.

    Cons

Too fast to adopt new tech. HNTB needs to really do a value add analysis before it invests in things that are pretty, flashy and costly.

    Advice to Management

Don't CHANGE for the sake of CHANGE. I am well aware that a certain people seem to pull new ideas out of thin air. Sometimes those new ideas need to stay in thin air.

The managers at HNTB will let you develop as much as you are willing to take initiative. You have the opportunity to work on some of the most innovative and largest projects in the country and with some of the best people. Compensation, benefits, and personal opportunities for growth are some of the best in the industry.

    Cons

Depending on your manager, there may be a lack of communication or development. However, if you take initiative and talk to your manager about where you want your career to go, then you will be given these opportunities. In the recent past there have been some layoffs, but nothing out of line with what the rest of the industry (or any industry in the US) has experienced over the last few years during the Great Recession.

    Advice to Management

Focus on the big picture, which is sustainable, profitable growth. Don't worry so much about TOJ and focus more on sales. Sales has a tendency to cure a lot of the problems where TOJ problems starts to arise.

I have been working at HNTB full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The company has very supportive management, they encourage you to try and advance yourself. Benefits are above average. They are pretty flexible with time off, and if employment is uncertain,do not get upset if you seek employment elsewhere as long as you make them aware of it.

    Cons

A lot of their work is by contract or project, so there is not necessarily much long term job security. However, a lot of companies are like that in this industry.
