I worked at HNTB full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

This is a financially strong company that's growing. It provides excellent benefits and compensation. The majority of technical staff are good to work with. Apple equipment is issued to the graphic designers. In house printing in some locations.

    Cons

Lower management is micromanaging, emotional, incompetent, negative, passive aggressive and weak. Marketing coordinators-no matter how junior-are over designers no matter how senior. Management does not know how to manage in general and really doesn't know how to manage designers. Management does not advocate for marketing staff. Work-life balance in marketing is bad. It's expected that marketing people will put work obligations ahead of personal commitments even if the work thing was last minute. Expect to work insanely long hours on big presentations. Travel was more than originally indicated. Graphic designer turnover is 70%. If you have a job that is decent don't let the pay and benefits that HNTB can offer change your mind. You will have to fight for personal time and will not be respected by your team.

    Advice to Management

Recognize when you've hired good skillful workers and let them do their job without constant nitpicking and negativity. Upper management should look at lower managemen. There is a reason for the departure rate and it's not the people leaving.

    Advice to Management

The company must keep their office leader as long as possible.

I have been working at HNTB full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

HNTB is a leader in the field of transportation infrastructure and getting stronger based on size of many recent wins. Leadership is focused on growth AND profitability which is good for the employee owners in the ESOP. Expectations of offices/people are becoming focused on the right things while still being aggressive.

    Cons

The firm has 30 different offices any multiple locations for some offices. Makes it hard to have a strong tie with the company overall given the various leaders and levels of leadership. Continued strengthening of communications is important.

    Advice to Management

Continue to think about the future and how to encourage the best from employees.

I worked at HNTB (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good work/life balance, great experience, a lot of flexibility in how to get reports done. A lot of great people to provide guidance as you learn and grow into the position.

    Cons

Limited upward mobility, not a lot of variety of work once you get familiar with the clients you work with on a regular basis.

    Pros

Some of the best pay in the industry. Great learning for people who are looking to learn. High expectations. Generally, co-workers are enjoyable and professional.

    Cons

Senior management is very conservative, seems somewhat short-sighted, consistently selects homogenous personnel for high-level roles, and rewards sales over delivery.

    Advice to Management

Connect with staff levels. Put more thought into the annual raise process and how performance can be recognized. Find more creative and fair ways to reward project performance.

I worked at HNTB (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Pay is good, holidays are plenty, insurance is okay, even though they offer a whopping one plan. The technical staff is awesome and very friendly.

    Cons

No amount of money is worth the mean, condescending, bullying environment that has been created in the Lake Mary office. God help you if you are a graphic designer coming into this office. Be prepared for to work for the coordinators and travel CONSTANTLY. Your past experience doesn't mean a thing. My time at HNTB taught me that money cannot buy you happiness. I left for a lower paying position, but I am happier than I have been in a long time. My opinion is valued and not debated, I am a part of the team not just a person to do the coordinators bidding, my manager is very personable not cold and robotic, I answer to one person instead of a manager, a coordinator, and the managers lap dog.
Forget work/life balance especially if you have kids - kids are completely irrelevant, hell their not even asked about. You will never hear "how was you weekend?" or "how's your family?".
Do not get talked into this "wonderful" environment. You will immediately regret it upon starting.

    Advice to Management

There needs to be leadership for the graphic designers. Local marketing "leadership" (whatever that is) needs to be replaced from the top down. The lap dog makes this position unbearable.
