I worked at HNTB full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Very professional working environment with solid pay and benefits. Opportunities to work on high-profile infrastructure projects that have real impact on communities. Well-defined processes for planning, new business pursuits and professional evaluations.

    Cons

Eighty percent of the business is in the transportation sector, which is struggling through changes in how it is funded over the long-term. Other lines of infrastructure business, such as architecture, don't receive the same amount of investment or support. In trying to find out how to remain profitable and competitive, the firm has explored a number of alternative profit centers, pouring talent and resources into them and then pulling back and dismantling them after a few years when things didn't work out as planned. Most of the power lies with the local offices rather than the corporate leadership, which has traditionally struggled to be seen as effective or accessible, although that's changing.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time there and would recommend it to anyone who wants a solid corporate experience. But you may find it necessary to move on after a while. If you're among the lucky few or find the right path, you may be able to build your entire career there.

    Advice to Management

Continue moving toward a more centralized, effective and present executive structure. Give staff, including those not in traditional profit-center positions, a clear path to promotion. Be proud of your transportation heritage, while investing in all your existing lines of businesses ... and their people. Plan ahead, but don't get lost in the process. Know who you are and don't hesitate to promote it, powerfully!

I worked at HNTB full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The pay and benefits including vacation at HNTB are top notch. I loved the company for the first 3-4 years I was employed there because I was made to feel like I was making a difference and was valued by the company.

    Cons

In a misguided attempt to make the Chairman of the Board richer before he retires (he needs to GO), HNTB has been chasing pipe dreams. Morale is down and people no longer feel like valuable contributers. There is no long-term or big picture thinking going on currently. It is all how can we make today the most profitable regardless if it hurts the company in the long run.

    Advice to Management

Stop chasing " the next big thing". Focus on what makes HNTB GREAT which is its people and the work in the transportation industry. Stop and think through the long-term implications of your decisions. The grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence.

    Pros

Technology is valued and is a leader in the ACE industry. Great open-door policy. Strives to maintain work sharing between offices nationally.

    Cons

Management makes too many organizational changes and doesn't stick to long term goals - a little to concerned with profits "today". Also job hour requirement measurement is not consistent.

    Advice to Management

Be consistent and have more confidence in your long term goals.

Coworkers are friendly and typically helpful

    Cons

Employee development isn't a high priority in the company culture

    Advice to Management

Find the balance between micromanagement and absentee management.

Trust employees and don't hand cuff them when they are trying to be productive
