I worked at HOK full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great comradery with the right people but you can generally say that anywhere.

    Cons

Gossip heavy. Heavy. No support for growth and development and in fact it's somehow frowned upon. Pay is below current rates in the same city (verified). Raises don't cover cost of living increases. Leadership incapable of leading. HR department, globally, is oddly part of the biggest problem. Loads of work but it's pocketed by each individual office as their own "Business Unit" that is not easily shared between offices. Results in painful layoffs.

I have been working at HOK full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Interdisciplinary design is harnessed within HOK, and designers get a chance to work on a large variety of project types and sizes. State of the art software and technology is used in an industry-leading approach to project design. Senior leadership is forward-thinking and allows for new ideas without being stifling or micro-managing.

    Cons

Workload can be demanding, so work/life balance can be challenging at times, but hard work never goes unnoticed or unrecognized. It takes a specially motivated person to fully realize the opportunities available within HOK.

Very knowledgeable and dedicated people, with focus on great design and clients.

    Cons

Big A, little E, is a difficult culture to manage.

I have been working at HOK full-time

    Pros

Amazingly talented working staff that continues to impress me at every turn. Sports work is extremely creative finding new ways to leverage the game.

    Cons

Corporate culture is a wet blanket on creativity. IT support is slim to none. Tools given to staff are outdated and yet design expectations are cutting edge

    Advice to Management

Cutting business development budgets in times of limited work is counter productive and will only serve to minimize new work being produced

I have been working at HOK full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great place to work when you are first starting out. It is a fairly structured environment that is great for learning. There is a pool of people with a diverse background so if you need help it is easy to ask for it.

    Cons

There are limited opportunities for younger designers to move up unless you're one of the favorites. Pay increases are minimal no matter how hard you work. Management plays favorites and that is the most disappointing thing of all. The staffing is ridiculous, a lot of people are frequently sitting around with nothing to do or aren't given enough work to fill up a 40 hour work week while others are working 60-70 hours a week just trying to survive.

    Advice to Management

Stop playing favorites. Maybe that will build some trust between you and the employees actually doing the work. It's hard for employees to put out great work when they can't trust management.
