I have been working at HOK full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Cool building interior, large work stations, diversity of project types, complementary valet parking, solid benefits, free snacks and beverages provided, part of national/ global network

    Cons

Not near dining options (coffee shop, restaurants, cafes), lots of street noise (traffic, sirens), not near downtown, not near freeway

    Advice to Management

Work to improve office morale, focus more on local projects, reduce gaps between projects, engage community (outreach and volunteering)

I have been working at HOK full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

They have multiple types of projects (you may end up in the one that you don't like).

    Cons

If you are not from midwest you would have a hard time. You may work on projects that you don't like for a long time. unrealistic expectation.

    Advice to Management

SF Interior group needs diversity. Favoritism toward certain employees will push others out.

I have been working at HOK full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Amazing portfolio of projects, talented designers, and hard-working staff. Great place to get experience if you’re right out of school.

    Cons

If you have industry experience, the environment will seem a little chaotic and it will be challenging to jump in and hit the ground running. Don’t try to look for a system or a process, it’s in someone’s head and if you are lucky, they may give you guidance if they’re not too busy. Everything is done at the very last possible minute. It’s important that you know how to stand up for yourself because the critical environment can be disheartening no matter how hard you work.

    Advice to Management

Your team members need more one-to-one conversations and to feel that you have their back. With no support from management, relentless, and never-ending deadlines, the workload and lack of a work-life balance can be crushing.

I worked at HOK full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The HOK in Kansas City has some really great people. I really loved working with my team. We tried to maintain the culture of 360 by being a hard working close nit family. The talent threshold of the people here is inspiring and the diversity of projects is broad and interesting.

    Cons

HOK struggles to allow young designers the opportunity to lead projects and meet clients. Because HOK's budget is so strict, many young people do not get the opportunity to travel and meet clients when projects are out of town. The male dominated structure is a huge issue as women are often skipped when it comes to offering leadership positions. Lastly, recent layoffs show how cut throat and inhumane HOK truly is. The layoffs occurred without even consulting senior leadership in the office (another office abroad made the decision of who to cut). The feeling of family was wiped away. Consider working for a company that actually cares about its employees.

    Advice to Management

Include upper management or anyone at all when evaluating team members. HOK supposedly believes it has great communication skills. In the layoffs, no communication was integrated in the decision making process. Bring the culture back by actually perceiving your employees to be valuable to the company rather than cutting them loose without a reflection upon the human, his or her work ethic, his or her knowledge base and experience of working with project teams.

    I worked at HOK full-time

    Pros

Colleagues and coworkers are amazing! Great teamwork throughout the organization and different departments. Work environment is supportive.

    Cons

All ratings are based on perspective from Consulting (does not reflect the architectural and design teams within the firm- which are awesome) Management within consulting is disorganized and ineffective. Leadership provides no guidance and struggles to address problems with managers throughout the firm. There is no support from people managers and efforts to improve processes are viewed as disagreement with leadership and people are punished for stepping up. Until consulting leadership across the US is addressed, the team will continue to lose talent.
