I worked at HRL full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Depending on your lab and what projects are available you could either be publishing novel research or programming exotic devices. There's no ping pong tables but checking the surf from your office window more than makes up for it.

    Cons

    Lots of meetings kill productivity.

    Advice to Management

Give the engineers a bit more autonomy and purpose and you'll get more results.

I worked at HRL full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Easy going. Job security. Awesome people to work with.

    Cons

    Everything else.
HR will refuse to give you the pay that you're worth.
Do not trust any conversation with HR unless its in writing.
If you're not a PhD you will not be valued in the company.
    Salary is far below average.
    No career advancement track.
A lot of drama and fighting in the upper management and project management.
    Raises are bad.
Really old fashioned company with a lot of technical debt.

    Advice to Management

Treat employees fairly no matter how educated or not.
Show that you care, and pay people what they are worth. Give better benefits packages.

I have been working at HRL full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I work with some of the smartest people in the industry. Project is managed well, is exciting, makes me want to get up and go to work. Malibu is beautiful.

    Cons

HRL is weirdly stingy about things and can treat their employees like children. They locked up the coffee milk because people were using it in their cereal occasionally. There aren't enough chairs or tables in the dining hall. The IT department has historically been chronically mismanaged and inconsistent (though this is perhaps getting better.)

    Advice to Management

Acknowledge that to attract the best talent, you need to treat them like adults and provide basic perks. You're competing with places like Google for your talent.

    Advice to Management
