I have been working at HWL Ebsworth full-time

    Pros

Fairly relaxed atmosphere and none of the top tier firm snobbery. Freedom to work in the manner that you please without too much restraint; Work hours are very reasonable, and there is no 'presenteeism" The Managing Partner is really inspirational

    Cons

There is a boys club and it is not spoken about but if you rub them the wrong way then watch out Despite promising an organised and supportive way to the top in reality it is every man for himself and you have to protect yourself from attacks within the firm that you may not know about rather than focus on building your practise externally

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the boys club, particularly the aggressive stealing of other people's clients when they are partners. There should be supervision of who is the relationship and responsible partner by someone other than those who merely assert it. There should be some quality control on who makes partner. The current system, where partners are ranked by their client base, doesn't account for those who are really bad... lawyers and just exposing the firm to future problems. The system of allowing partners to select those that answer questions about their performance is completely biased. There should be some standard of excellence that partners have to achieve, much like the Bar aspires too, rather than letting those that earn the most money become partner. Also, partners should be trained in personnel management and how to establish good relationships with clients.

I worked at HWL Ebsworth full-time

    Pros

Fairly laid back and good work-life balance.

    Cons

Partners are pretty much at war with each other and there is no progression from junior staff to partnership (although they say there is..). Very bad for women. No company policy (or enforced one) about discrimination and no real presence of women in partnership. Really inflexible workplace policies about having to be present and accounted for, rather than being able to work at home.

    Advice to Management

Start monitoring how partners treat junior staff. Promote junior staff to partnership rather than making lateral appointments. Create better environment for staff so they stay.

I have been working at HWL Ebsworth full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

In the particular area I work in, I do have the opportunity to get involved in some significant and cutting edge files.

    Cons

This is the stingiest firm I have ever worked at. The low-fee model really effects every aspect of working here. Partners just do not care (or want to pay for) personal or professional development, and work-life balance is a meaningless concept. The focus on billing clients and being made to write off work as non-chargeable is absolutely relentless and soul destroying. Workplace culture as set by partners... results is what any normal person would describe as harassment of staff. As lawyers, we are somehow somehow supposed to just accept this treatment as the norm. Maybe to a degree, but the environment at HWL is definitely at the toxic end of the range. If you want to have a life outside of work, and be recognised for professional qualities that don't relate to exceeding your billable hours budget, this place is not for you. I only wish clients knew what really went on behind the scenes to make this "low fee" model work.

I have been working at HWL Ebsworth full-time for less than a year

    Pros

    - some interesting work - sophisticated, blue chip clients - some lovely partners (exception, not norm)

    Cons

    - no real precedent library - no matter management system, with bring ups, etc. - no opportunity to discuss salary - literally no subject matter training - huge variance in style between operators - focus on billings which is def on way out in 2019

I worked at HWL Ebsworth full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Nothing that I can think of.

    Cons

The culture is absolutely toxic, and the HR staff (Sydney) only add to this through pettiness. One of the worst experiences I have had in my legal career - the staff only care about money, no care for members of their team or younger employees who may be doing it tough.

I worked at HWL Ebsworth full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    Made a couple of friends.

    Cons

Management lack skills; too busy worrying about party time over the real staff issues and the staff genuinely suffering and needing assistance. HR have their hand's cuffed behind their back, or they just don't care. Gained nothing, lost nothing. BYO tissues.

    Advice to Management

Stop keeping incompetent staff and actually give your good staff the time, effort and resources they deserve. Stop ignoring the problems. Stop promoting and accepting a negative workplace.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at HWL Ebsworth part-time for less than a year

    Pros

Not one pro to working here.

    Cons

Nothing positive to say. Girls in Commercial are nasty backstabbers. Partners are all about making money for the firm. Bill every 30 days or you cant work on the matter. Clients think the rates are cheap but because you are constantly billing them they are actually getting ripped off. Partners all copy precedents from other firms and change the format to suit them.

    Advice to Management

Actually start to care for your clients and stand up to the bullys.

    No opinion of CEO

    I worked at HWL Ebsworth

    Pros

    Can't think of anything positive

    Cons

Tightest firm. HR don't care about anyone. No social events that you don't have to pay for. Some nice people but overall wouldn't recommend.

    Advice to Management

Appreciate staff. Start giving pay rises. Employ more staff where needed.
