I have been working at Hagerty Insurance full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

This company does not skimp on technology or resources. Lots of consideration is taken in to offer the employees fun activities to participate in.

    Cons

There seems to be a lot of people who continually move around to different positions because they know someone. Some people do not get any opportunities where others get several.

I have been working at Hagerty Insurance full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Innovative, difficult, and meaningful work. Great people and a great place to work. Amazing opportunity if you want to live in Northern Michigan. Awesome little perks like cool cars always around and Friday snacks. I don't agree with the work / life balance most people have complained about. Yeah sometimes, especially in the summer, we all have to work harder but that's not an issue. That's just the nature of the business. McKeel is amazing leader who can inspire employees and is truly visionary. If the culture can survive the exponential growth this will be one of the truly great companies.

    Cons

The core values start with, "Take care of each other first." That's becoming less and less true. It has gotten so far away from understanding that this company got its success from the employees as much as the upper management. Though you need a balance of both the workers and the leaders it feels that now days they just focus on spending tons of money on fancy executives and less on taking care of those in the trenches. Then instead of maintaining the culture it now all about the numbers over the people. Numbers are important but you'll get the numbers if you take care of the people. Is crushing your employees really worth an extra percent of growth when you already grow at an extreme rate? This lack of focusing on each other has created this culture of over dramatic office politics and back stabbing in the middle management.

All that said, you'll be hard pressed to find a better place to work.

    Advice to Management

Some years ago we read a book called "Leaders Eat Last". I suggest they read it again... and again... and again. Also, start getting pay up to at least industry standards. The culture has to be maintained to the very top. Not just mandated, actually practiced. If it’s not then it will never extend down to the employees.

    Pros

great training, great product, great team members

    Cons

micro management, say they build leaders, but they just replace them

    Advice to Management

someone needs to remember how the little people got them where they are, it is not always about numbers

I have been working at Hagerty Insurance full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Lots of employee benefits and outings. Higher pay rate than your average company in northern Michigan. Pretty flexible scheduling in the winter.

    Cons

Hiring managers that aren't qualified. Promoting a work life balance but begging everyone to work OT constantly. Even though it's not required at this point, it's been made clear it will be reflected poorly on you if you don't work your life away like some of the mindless drones that do. Inconsistent/unattainable expectations that stress you out to the point you have to leave work for a mental health day. A clear favoritism towards males advancing theirs careers over females. One moment of weakness is held over your head like you stabbed someone in your neck. You are micromanaged and every little move is monitored.... i.e. Bathroom breaks, assisting coworkers, etc. the dress code is awful as week.... as there is no dress code.

    Advice to Management

Listen to what your employees are telling you! Hire more staff. Actually live what you promote. Let your employees have a work life balance. If you struggle filling OT, hire more employees or you're going to overwork, over stress and lose your good employees that have held on thus far. Simplify and explain procedures and expectations.

I worked at Hagerty Insurance full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Insurance benefits are good, you will make lifelong friends, and overtime is plenty in the summer. Hagerty U classes are fun and educational.

    Cons

Managers that only care about the bottom line. They say they care about employees but really dont. Over the past few years, duties have been added to their main workforce and no compensation for tripling the workload. Upper management is disconnected from what really happens on the floor. HR appears to be puppets and doesnt actually find out the facts before reprimands.

    Advice to Management

Do what you say you are going to.

I have been working at Hagerty Insurance full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great CEO, fun co-workers, gym and cafe on site, good benefits/incentive package, employees get to help restore classic cars and attend classes to learn about cars

    Cons

Very low pay, especially when the cost of living is so high in Traverse City. A lot of politics and favoritism shown by management. It is next to impossible to get a day off during busy season and you're constantly put on the spot to work overtime. If you don't, they threaten to start making overtime mandatory.

    Advice to Management

Stop focusing so much on being designated as a "Great Place to Work" and focus on actually BEING a great place to work again.

I worked at Hagerty Insurance full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Modern work areas, employees given healthy vegetables at their desks in summer, free stuff, company party, great insurance benefits, exercise benefits, lots of job opportunities

    Cons

Poor management, drama, management plays favorites, employees tattle on each other to HR, cliques, new ideas are not accepted unless they come from the top down, too unprofessional, like high school, poor dress code.

    Advice to Management

Increase professionalism. Stop treating employees like children.

I worked at Hagerty Insurance full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great benefits package and work/lifestyle balance.

    Cons

To excel at Hagerty, you need to sit at the right lunch table. Great employees who push the boundaries with new ideas are often ignored and pushed aside while kool-aid drinking lemmings are promoted through the ranks.

This brings me to my next point, ineffective middle management. The managers distribution list is roughly 60% of the total employee population. The phrase "I have five bosses, Bob", comes to mind.

On the surface, the company culture is great, but in the end doesn't make up for the politics. And we all thought the 2016 election season was bad.

    Advice to Management

Start promoting people with new ideas, not the bobble heads to actually make Hagerty a great place to work.

I worked at Hagerty Insurance part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - Good benefits package.
    - Work culture is very positive and the people are always smiling.
    - Really nice, modern building.
    - Can move up if you work hard and demonstrate the prerequisite skills and knowledge. Training is offered.
    - Has its own cafe and gym.
    - You get free stuff all the time.

    Cons

    - Benefits are mitigated by relatively low pay. It's below industry standard.
    - Warned against asking about salary standards and told rumors about past incidents. That's illegal under the NLRA, but since you're an At-Will employee, they'll just find another reason to fire you.
    - Most people have a Stepford wive's stare. I'm pretty sure a requirement for a full time position is getting your upper lips stitched into a smile.
    - Every executive thinks they're the next Robert Baratheon and are planning the business equivalent of the Red Wedding.
    - A victim of their own success. As one of the premier employers in Traverse City, they can pull better talent than they could in the past. It makes moving up without education or experience much harder. Not to say you can't, but the ceiling is lower and the barriers higher.
    - At the end of the day, the job is selling insurance to the 10% of the population that can afford a luxury car and boat. During those sobering moments when you're not blowing your paycheck at the bar, you question what you're doing with your life.
