I have been working at Hal Leonard full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Easy job, great benefits, good hours, most people in building are easy to get along with.

    Cons

No consistency in monitoring behavior...no personal accountability. Many are allowed to do what ever (eat at desk, talk excessively, surf internet, extended breaks) without consequences. No forward thought, only snap reactions to problems. Does not encourage movement within company. Would rather bring in new people.

    Advice to Management

Get to know who works for you. Encourage internal promotion and work with your employees who are already here and want to move up the ladder.

I have been working at Hal Leonard full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Knowledgeable and trusting management.
Supervisors listen to their workers, and are willing to try employees' ideas when it comes to suggestion as to what may help workers do their jobs better. Management are very friendly and understanding when dealing with employees' concerns.

Company provides opportunities for employees to make use of his/her unique skills and interests. So, workers have some influence/input as to what types of projects they take on.
    Office is clean and comfortable.

    Cons

Schedule for full-time in-house workers is rigid (a typical "9-5" 40hr work week).
Salary is acceptable, but lower than it could be.

I worked at Hal Leonard (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Health insurance offered was pretty good.

    Cons

No training. Salary was below average considering the type of work we were tasked with performing. Work load was unmanageable. Unwillingness by upper management to hire appropriate amount of staff to handle the work load. Upper management extremely secretive and unsupportive of lower/middle management. Completely inflexible about schedules.

I have been working at Hal Leonard full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Open and accessible management. You can go and talk to anyone at any level.
Flexibility in how I do my job.
Best "team" I've ever worked with.
Office is located in the same building as distribution. This allows us to go on the floor if something comes up that requires looking into.
    Clean work environment.
Today they had a short information meeting to let us know of a business change, before we saw it in the papers. I thought that was nice.
    Pay increase after three months.
We still have a picnic. A lot of other local businesses don't.
    Company discount.

    Cons

Average pay, not as high as some other employers in town.
Dress code is stricter than I'd like, but more relaxed than most offices in the area.

    Advice to Management

Continue to look at things that can be done to make it better to work here. The break room is boring and hot. Bring some pictures in, color the walls, do something to make it pleasant.

I worked at Hal Leonard full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Jobs are simple easy to learn and benchmarks are attainable if effort is given. Management
generally leaves you alone to do your job. Most long time employees move to first shift. Company will invest in newer technology

    Cons

Companies upper management is not in Winona, rarely visits and has really cares less. There is th
rub....... sexual harassment, job discrimination openly exist because the controller is left to run the show and the HR department is run by the local firing expert. You are a number and there is little chance to be promoted to a position that pays a living wage.

    Advice to Management

Fire the Controller and HR department head and show you really care about your employees

I worked at Hal Leonard full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Hal Leonard has some great products, and good pay and benefits. The work for a Web software developer there is fun, but challenging. The coworkers are fun and smart.

    Cons

Software process and tools are hilariously backwards. CVS, FTP, no automated testing or deployment, and all homebrewed tools for issue tracking and publishing leave a lot to be desired. Insurance and benefits unnecessarily complex. No process improvement, any new ideas seen as a threat.

    Advice to Management

Upgrade your software development process out of the Stone Ages, of you're going to lose even more employees!
