I have been working at Halifax Health Medical Center (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Majority of staff is great to work with. Employee, working staff - stick together. I've only made it this long due to my fellow co-workers. If you are able to avoid the drama & know that the managers are not your friends, then you will be ok.

    Cons

Chief Nursing Officer, only cares about mother/baby & labor/delivery because that was her specialty. Only praises & makes efforts for those floors everyone else is just a body..

    Advice to Management

Spend a day on a floor without notifying management or anyone. Also, do it more than once & see when the manager is on the floor & what they are doing. You may also witness things done by employees who get away with things that should be written up but since they are a body it is overlooked so the manager doesn't look bad...For upper management don't think the managers are your friends & let them know about this because they will let the staff know, so they look good. Focus on a floor for a day. Have upper management come up for 2 hours & leave. They will think they are safe but then you need to have another member of upper management come for another 2 hours..etc... If you do this on several occasions within a 2 week span, focusing on individual units you may get an eye-opening experience

    Pros

Great company to work for. They try hard to make sure everyone is happy and enjoys their job. HR Department has everything together to help you quickly.

    Cons

Cafeteria food is terrible and they are only open during the day so if you work at night and forget to pack your lunch be prepared to eat from a vending machine.

I worked at Halifax Health Medical Center full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Family oriented group of individuals that provide excellent care for patients. I had a great time working with these people and hope the work environment has not changed.

The position that I had was an introductory opportunity into the medical field. Knowing this, OR team members around me helped direct my career. I used the lessons learned in the OR as a stepping stone to enhance my career path.

Also, I always speak highly of the operating room manager (current Chief Surgical Services Officer). She's the best of the best.

    Cons

The only negative experiences that I have encountered were with panicked/power hungry RNs. However, in any OR setting you will experience this behavior and I believe that different places are far worse.

    Advice to Management

Continue nurturing a family environment. You have done a great job providing a "team" feel to the OR staff.

I have been working at Halifax Health Medical Center full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great team environment for nurses. Everyone is always willing to help out. Most doctors are good to work with.

    Cons

Pay is not great, nurses start at about $20.50/hr. Staffing is always an issue on the floors, nurses are pushed for quick discharges.

    Advice to Management

Be for real with you staffing ratios on the floors, no playing with the numbers. Quit spending money on expansion and spend it on staffing
