I worked at Hallmark full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Wonderfully caring company with an amazing Hall family at the helm. Generous to the Kansas City community. Profit sharing plan.

    Cons

Manager would rather hire from outside the company vs. promote from within. Millennials are hired with poor work ethic (come in around 9am, leave around 3pm, long lunch or workout at the gym for two hours or take a non-work related nearby college class during work hours) and no company loyalty. Long-term employees are no longer valued.

    Advice to Management

Quit eliminating positions that are still needed and quit hiring millennials who don't care about the company and who won't be there in five years.

    Pros

The balance mostly pretty good. Sometimes not always easy but that's what I need is flex ability between myself and family.

    Cons

Don't think it's right started 4 1/2 years and only make 9.13hr and now people start at 10 HR and I've worked hard.

    Advice to Management

If your going to start people at more than people who started 4 to 5 years ago. You need to fix it.

    Pros

We work independently. Guidance is there when needed. Positive environment. Pay rates are competitive. Company works to keep up with consumer trends.

    Cons

Part time hours, full time availability and is mentality expected . Unreasonable restrictive time budgets. Information communicated can be vague. No benefits.

I have been working at Hallmark full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

-Kansas City is an affordable place to live.
-There isn't a single Artist/Designer at the company who doesn't excel at what they do.
-The work is very interesting. I'm never bored!
    -Matching 401k and profit sharing.
-The Halls are very nice people.
-You are not constantly working overtime.
    -Health insurance is pretty good.
-After a year of service, your PTO is competitive with what other companies offer.
-You also get 5 days a year for creative renewal if you are in creative.
    -Great Internship Program
-There's an annual conference the company puts on for creatives where they bring in really awesome speakers.

    Cons

-Can be very cliquey. If you are new, it takes awhile for people to get to know and trust you. Sometimes it feels like you are back in high school.
-Not a lot of opportunity for growth (unless you want to be a manager).
-Not a lot of diversity in many departments.
-Even though the company is LGBT friendly, there's a good amount of employees who are not out at work because there’s some people at the company who are still very uncomfortable around LGBT folks.
-Some creatives are allowed to freelance and some are not. This causes a lot of jealously and unnecessary drama.
    -Many creatives feel overworked.
-Not a lot of women in upper management.
-The workspaces are ugly beige cube farms, which can be uninspiring.

    Advice to Management

Don't put awesome managers in roles that are not using their strengths. More creatives, less managers. More women are needed in upper management. Keep up the diverse hiring.

    Pros

Excellent training. Independent work. Flexible hours. Easy to learn and use hand held computer device. Guidance beyond initial training readily available via Crown Connect device and Territory Supervisor. It's fun to put new merchandise out and then watch it go out the door through sales. Very rewarding to leave department looking clean and organized.

    Cons

It can get a bit hectic around holiday times, but that's true of all retail work. The number of hours budgeted by management is low and unrealistic to keep departments in tip top shape and organized. Hourly pay is low.

    Advice to Management

Be more generous with budgeted hours. A raise in pay might be a good idea.

I have been working at Hallmark part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Flexible schedule, freedom to choose hours, pretty easy work for the most part; totally work unsupervised. They put you in stores close to home. No phones, no stress, don't really have to work with the customers.

    Cons

Never see a co-worker, my supervisor is hard to get a hold of. Putting up the different seasons is confusing. Couldn't get more hours/stores even asking for more work. Listening to supermarket music all the time is a drag! Only ever PT.

    Advice to Management

Check in with your RM's more often.
